Research Project
This assignment was developed to help students focus on the critical evaluation of scholarly journal* articles. Students may choose any article of their choice as long as it meets the following criteria:
– The article is related to nutrition and disease (ex. diabetes, cancer, heart disease, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, etc.)
– It is a scholarly journal article that is peer-reviewed (IMPORTANT!!!)
*Search SCC’s Library Site (limiters are “Peer-Reviewed” and “Full Text”)
– The article was published within the last 5 years
– The article should not be a “review” article, but rather an article that includes all the study design details (typically described within the “Data and Methods” section)
Instructions: Thoroughly read your chosen article carefully (at least 3 times). Make notes/highlight throughout the article and how it contributes to its thesis, or argument. Type and submit answers to the following questions about your article (short answers are acceptable).
1. What is the title of the article?
2. Who wrote the article? Include all authors.
3. What is the name of the journal in which the article was published?
4. What is the summary of the article? (In your own words.)
5. What is the thesis (main argument/main point) of the article?
6. What type of study/studies was/were conducted? Describe the details of the study/studies:
a. Did they include the study type? What is it called/how would you describe it?
b. How did they collect the data? Was there an experiment or analyzation of previous studies? Who was involved?
c. How long did the study take? (If it doesn’t specify, how long do you think it took?)
d. What are the weaknesses of the study? Explain.
7. Did the author(s) fully support their conclusions? Give examples. (Any charts or graphs – what do they outline?)
8. Do you agree with the results? Are the findings believable? Why? Explain your answer.
9. How do these findings affect you personally? Why did you choose this topic?
10. How could these findings affect us globally?
NOTE: Make sure you print out/read the actual full-length article – NOT the summary or abstract of the article. This is important, as you will need the article details to completely answer all the questions.
