Hippocrates was a Greek physician who was known as the father of medicine and lived around 460 BC to 375 BC. He taught people that sickness came from scientific reasons after they had attributed illness to superstition. Hippocrates studied the human body and described the disease symptoms. As he was traveling around Greece, he founded a school where he taught his ideas. Later on, he founded an Oath of Medical Ethics that is practiced up to date by physicians as they do their medical practice; hence the name the “Father of Medicine.” He scientifically described different diseases how they could get treated after observation. Athens faced a plague epidemic and got saved by Hippocrates, thus honoring the Athenians (HIPPOCRATEIA, 2020).
Barbers in Europe practiced surgery for over six centuries. Physicians got forbidden from performing surgical procedures as they felt that the practice was beneath their dignity. The minor surgeries and bloodletting got turned over to the barber-surgeons, referred to as “doctors of the short robe.” The physicians or medical doctors were referred to as “doctors of the long robe” and performed the major surgeries that the barber-surgeons could not perform. The barber-surgeons performed procedures like amputation, pulling teeth, and bloodletting using razors and sponges.
There usually are three colors on the barber poles that represent bloodletting. The three colors are red, white, and blue. The red color represents blood, while the white color represents the bandage used to stop bleeding. On the blue color, different theories state that blue represents the veins cut during bloodletting, while another theory states that blue represents patriotism. A Frenchman by the name of Ambroise Pare, considered as the father of modern surgery, labeled the colors on the barbershop pole since he was a barber-surgeon himself. The pole is significant since it symbolizes the stick that a patient squeezed to make the veins withstand the procedure (Nix, 2018).
