Source Check & Outline

Since we are starting to work on quoting and citing in class, what I would like you to do for the source check is the following:

Choose one of the sources you plan to use for your paper and practice integrating a quote from it into your own words OR paraphrasing it to create a new, grammatical sentence
Make sure you include your in-text citation
Write the works cited entry for the source.
Your source check and outline should be in MLA format – heading, double spaced, one inch margins.

So, if I were doing this, it might look like this…

The outline can follow any format you wish, but make sure that you follow the rubric – your topic and focus should be clear, the structure and organization should be clear, and it should be in MLA Format.  Check the rubric!

Paper Two – Writing to Inform

ENG 101

Fall 2020

It’s time to apply some of the concepts we’ve been talking about in terms of writing to inform. This is different than writing to reflect and some of you may find it more challenging as you are focusing on something other than yourself and your own life. Some of you may find it less challenging because it is more objective and more distant than a self-study. Either way, it is time to show what you have learned in connection with course content. It’s also time to start using sources to support the ideas that you have. To this end, please choose one of the following to develop for your second major writing assignment:

Write a LETTER to a specific friend or relative wherein you inform him or her about archetypes and connect the relationship you have to those archetypes.  So, your audience for this paper is the person you chose – therefore, he or she will be familiar with the relationship you share but not familiar with the archetypes.  Your purpose will be to inform your audience about the archetype he or she fills.  Your potential sources are the class PowerPoint and the two essays, and possibly an interview.
Write a PROFILE of one of the following areas on campus:

The LibraryThe One Stop
The Write Place
The Incubator
The Academic Commons
The Math Center
Campus Safety
Honors Studies
Student Life Office
Disability Services
The Café
The Book Nook
A club on campus
Academic Advising, Career, and Transfer Services (AACTS)
Other (clear with me first)

Your audience is people who are familiar with the college on a general level (such as a community member, a parent, or a new student) but are unfamiliar with the details of specific student services.  Your purpose will be to inform your audience about the area of the college you picked to inform them of the services provided.  Your potential sources are interviews with relevant people and literature provided by the place you picked (including websites).

Write an ARTICLE for a school newspaper that explains what our course is like. Focus on one of more of the structural elements listed below. Your audience for is someone who is familiar with our college and with the concept of writing classes but NOT familiar with the specific elements of our course. Your purpose will be to inform your audience about some aspect of our class. Your potential sources are things like our ‘textbook’ links, the learning outcomes statement, any class PowerPoint, and the syllabus.  You can choose to write about:The structure – first year composition, Honors
The approach – things like teaching style, response papers, papers, activities
The materials – things like the PowerPoints,  the readings, the use of BlackBoard
The content – things like documenting sources, archetypes , genres, communication triangle, memoirs, writing to reflect, writing situation (contexts)

Use some combination of your life, one or more of the memoirs, class lecture notes, class discussions, and the essays we read for class to write an INFORMATIVE ESSAY that explores and explains a class term.  Your audience, therefore, is someone who is familiar with the concept and with the readings you use in support of it.  Your purpose is to show your mastery.  Your potential sources are anything we’ve read this semester, class notes, your own work; basically, use anything from class that supports your idea.  You can choose anything from the list above.

Things NOT to do…

Do NOT pick a famous person whom you would have to research
Do NOT do any research on archetypes – you have all the sources you need for that one

Requirements

Use of sources – memoirs from class, essays on archetypes, class notes/materials, interviews, material on FLCC website or in FLCC offices
MLA formatting for presentation and for documentation and citation
Five pages – 4 full pages of writing and a works cited page in MLA 8 format
Creative and unique title – don’t just copy one of the titles we’ve been reading in class

Resources you can use…

Any of the three memoirs we read
Both or either of the informative essays we read on archetypes
An interview with a friend, relative, student, or college employee
Any course documents, lecture notes, or PowerPoints
Documentation / literature found online or in the area of the college that you choose
