Peer Review Guidelines

General Directions:

First, read your classmate’s essay through in its entirety before making any comments.

Don’t be afraid to share your true opinion of the piece with the writer, but remember to be courteous—provide constructive criticism.

Remember, in order for each of you to receive helpful feedback, you much each give helpful feedback, so please take your time and give your classmate thoughtful, sincere responses.

Using the “Review” tab in Microsoft Word, make sure the “track changes” button is set to “on,” and provide editing suggestions directly in your classmate’s file. You can also use the comments feature (which usually looks like a Post-It note) to add comments or ask questions in the margins of your classmate’s essay.

Type up your answers to the following questions (either in a separate file or directly into your classmate’s first draft file—it doesn’t matter which).

Questions to Answer:

Does the essay fulfill all requirements of the assignment? If not, what is lacking?

What seems to be the essay’s thesis statement (main point)?

Does the essay have a separate introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion?

How does the essay’s introduction draw you in and make you want to read the rest of the essay? If it doesn’t, suggest some ways the writer might make it more engaging.

Note the main idea of each paragraph—rephrase each main idea in your own words.

Indicate any areas where the writer seems to drift off topic. (Each sentence within a paragraph should further the main idea of that particular paragraph—and all main ideas should support the essay’s thesis.)

Do you feel that the writer provided sufficient evidence from the story to support his or her main points? Has he or she given you enough info about the story for you to understand what happens in the story, even if you haven’t read it?

Does the writer provide in-text citations each time he or she makes use of a primary or secondary source? If any are missing, mark these omissions on the essay itself.

Is the paper formatted according to MLA guidelines and does it include a works cited page?

What effect do you think the writer wanted to have on you as an audience? Did the essay achieve that effect, and why or why not?

Does the writer analyze/interpret the story rather than just describing it?

Does the argument that the writer is making about the story seem worthwhile? In other words, is the thesis somehow connected to larger issues of theme, or does it leave you thinking, “okay, but so what?”

What did you particularly like about this essay? What do you feel are its strengths?

Identify one higher order concern you would be sure to work on before handing in this essay if it were yours.
