1. Choose one piece of music to research and write about (can be a symphony, opera, choral piece, string quartet, ballet, song, piano piece, etc.).
  2. Research the piece and its composer online.  Try to learn as much as you can about the piece itself and the composer’s life at the time the piece was written.  For example, if you were to choose Beethoven’s 3rd Symphony, you’d want to know where he was in life when he wrote it, why he wrote it, what his emotional and physical state were at the time, for what occasion (if any) did he write this symphony, etc.
  3. Discuss the musical elements and how they are used in the piece (melody, harmony, rhythm, form, the instruments and/or voices, dynamics, etc.).
  4. Include a personal reflection on the piece.  Did you enjoy it?  Why or why not?
  5. As part of your preparation, listen to the piece multiple times, over multiple days.  Most music is available on YouTube many times over (you can probably find hundreds of that 3rd symphony by Beethoven I mentioned above).  It’s a good idea to listen to different performances to get multiple interpretations and musical perspectives.
