Reflect on significant times in your life: special moments, events, occasions, arguments, conversations, losses, and the like. When resurrecting those rich memories, select one (for focus), and identify an episode (something frozen in time) you want to use as your story. An episode is a very short, extremely memorable moment that lasted a few minutes at most. This will enable you to craft a story laced with depth, rather than breadth.

If your story has a clear purpose, moral, or lesson, do NOT disclose the moral (e.g., this is a story about hope…). Listeners should know what your story is about by listening to and experiencing your story, thanks to the absorbing, maybe even riveting yarn you convey. A powerful opening is essential. Effective storytellers do not begin with “I want to talk about…” Ever! Equally important is your closing. Never close with “That’s It!” “I’m Done!” Or, anything similar. That said, your closing must be planned. It’s all in the way it is conveyed. The way your voice orchestrates the closing tells us you are done. Remember that no narrative is a comprehensive profile of your life so decide where you want to end.

Prepare your narrative so that you enter the core of your story quickly (start with the drama, tension, or conflict, if possible). Your opening should set the scene, establish the mood, introduce the protagonist, or offer anything that will engage your listeners from the very beginning.

You will share your story in class
