You have been seconded from being Head of Production into the MD’s job for three-six months minimum and in this time you have to learn quite a lot and do quite a lot. The business manufactures ceramics (tableware) for commercial customers such as restaurants, and also ranges to be sold through shops to the end customer. It also provides a ceramics design service for restaurants wishing to have a unique look for their tableware, as part of their branding. The business has been struggling for a while because of changes in law, customer needs, the higher number of competitors, including overseas suppliers who can make the items for less and sell them for less. You feel that during your time as stand-in MD, and with the full support of your ailing Managing Director, that you can learn enough from a variety of sources, visits and activities to be able to put a good plan together to make the business stronger, more appealing, more competitive, and more profitable.
