Use the link above to watch the video.  It starts with about a six minute video clip from the European Space Agency (ESA) explaining the concept of Newton’s first law (The Law of Inertia) and includes several demonstrations with explanations.  There is also a video from the ISS demonstrating Newton’s Second Law.  Following these clips are three short inertia video demonstrations and 2 Newton’s Second Law Myths.  Be sure to watch the entire video.

For this discussion you must post one main discussion post and reply to one other student’s post.  .

Your main post must include:

  1. Choose ONE of the three Inertia demonstrations  OR ONE of the two Newton’s Second Law myth statements.   State which of the these you are going to discuss (Demonstration 1 is the chalk demonstration, Demonstration 2 is the stacked coins demonstration and Demonstration 3 is the egg drop demonstration.  Myth #1 is the shopping cart statement, Myth #2 is the Car statement (5 points)
  2. A full explanation of the science.  If there are forces explain what they are, if they are balanced or unbalanced etc.  Do any forces change and if so how?  What specifically causes any object to change its motion, etc.  (15 points).
    1. For any of the three inertia demonstrations:

To fully explain the science you must talk about each part of the video, before the interaction, during the interaction and after the interaction.

Each of the three demonstrations has an object of focus: the chalk, the second coin in the stack and the eggs

They also have an interaction that disrupts its state of rest.

To fully explain the science you must talk about the forces on the focus object before the interaction and why this results in their state of rest, what changes during the interaction (why does the focus object change its state of rest specifically what happens to the balance of the forces, and if unbalanced, what force causes it to move) and why it returns to a state of rest after the interaction.

    2. For either of the myth statements:

To fully explain the myths, you must clearly state what is wrong with the statement.  Why, based on the physics we have learned is it wrong… AND what the correct science or statement actually should be and why…

  1. Think of something you experience in your daily life that is related to inertia or Newton’s Second Law.  Share this with your fellow students, be sure to explain the science of  your example and how it is related to one of these concepts.   (10 points). [For example if you can think of something that relates while driving your car you might state…. while driving my car I experience inertia in this way….]. Once you think about it, you should be able to find numerous ways you experience Newton’s first law often.  Try to pick an experience that you feel other students can relate to as well.
