TOPIC:

Our exploration of the intersection between race and politics this semester has afforded the opportunity to examine if, when, and how race is ever a consideration in the administration of political frameworks and governance in the United States.

Recent debates within our society have arisen around issues related to health care (i.e. coverage, vaccinations, etc.), education (i.e. the teaching of CRT), the Justice System (i.e., criminal sentencing, policing, etc.) and a variety of other issues. Given the context of our discussions, lecture, and provided content this semester, provide a detailed response to the following proposition:

The United States government, through the historic demonstration of political action, possesses little to no intrinsic motivation to create economic, social and political structures that are effective at eliminating bias and creating equitable outcomes for all groups in the country.  The  sustainability of the country is dependent upon systemic inequalities the use of legislation and policy in ways that create disproportionate outcomes for groups (i.e. socioeconomic status, race, religion, age, sexual orientation, etc.)  Following this model ensures that influence, power and wealth will not be dis-aggregated among a diversity of individuals.

Essay must include:

  • Communication and Expression of Response (includes the organization of your argument, and the clarity of the response)
  • Provision of Support (includes the use of relevant and specific examples from current events, and/or information or examples of items/content discussed this semester, and the identification, incorporation of, and explanation of how the examples connect to relevant concepts that support your position [i.e. political socialization, influence of the media, constitutional construction, the necessity of civil rights movements, suffrage and reconstruction, bureaucratic influence and organization, etc.])
  • Analysis and Mastery of Subject Matter (includes the demonstration of the depth of your understanding of concepts discussed this semester and the ability to analyze and connect ideas)
  • Conclusion (again, agreement or disagreement with the proposition does not matter, however a stated conclusion to your position should be included).
