Directions: The purpose of this assignment is to consider how the research, theories, and concepts from the course translate to teaching practices in the context of PK-12 school communities.  Specifically, in this paper (2,500 words or 10 pages double spaced), you will address a series of prompts that ask you to describe how, as a literacy leader, you will effectively foster just, equitable, and inclusive spaces and educational experiences that foster students academic development in literacy and reading at one school.  Please begin by reading some contextual information about the school, and then addressing each of the prompts below. Be sure to consistently support your responses with relevant examples and research.  The paper should follow APA guidelines (e.g., headings and seriation rules, references).


Contextual Information: You have recently been assigned to serve as a grade-level lead teacher at the elementary school in which you teach. Your school has a large population of students from culturally and (70% Latinx, 10% Black, 10% Pacific Islander, 5% Vietnamese, 3% White, 2% Multiracial) and linguistically diverse (60% Spanish, 3% Vietnamese) backgrounds. 100% of the students at the school receive free and/or reduced breakfast and lunch. Students at the school underperform on many measures of reading proficiency and your principal has asked that you create a plan that outlines effective literacy and reading instruction to support your grade level. Please identify which grade level you are teaching and supporting in your paper.

  • How would you define literacy?
  • How might this conceptualization of literacy influence your instructional approaches?

Definition of Reading

  • Discuss YOUR definition of reading as supported by theorists.  

Ideal Reader/Goals

  • Based upon your definitions of reading and literacy, describe an ideal reader (all grown-up). 
  • Include what the reader would be able to do. Share concrete examples.
  • How does this translate to the goals you have for your students?

Components for Literacy Success (Here is where you begin your discussion of how you will lead your grade level)

  • Describe the components of an effective approach to literacy instruction for your grade level.
    • Areas to consider and include:
      • the role of motivation, classroom environment, and the school/home connection
      • skills for the emergent reader
      • the role of word recognition, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, writing 
      • the role of assessment
      • connection to standards
      • fostering just, equitable, and inclusive education
    • Additional guidelines
      • Define the terms you discuss (e.g., phonemic awareness, fluency)
      • Cite relevant theorists/research in your responses
      • Offer examples
      • Share the benefits of this components/approaches
    • How will you ensure that these are culturally relevant and sustaining? Draw from your fieldwork experiences in this course, as well as additional learning in READ 514 when sharing your response.
    • Share some examples of curricular and pedagogical recommendations (may be general descriptions).

Conclusion

  • Be sure to summarize key points, and any closing thoughts, in a formal conclusion.
