For the term paper you must formulate an argument on a contemporary political, social, or cultural issue that you find interesting, controversial, and/or mistaken. Find two popular opinion articles on the topic. Opinion articles must come from a reputable source either in print or online. Reputable sources include newspapers (e.g. New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, etc.), magazines (e.g. New York Magazine, The Atlantic, Reason, etc.), or online/cable sources (e.g. CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, etc.). The two popular opinion articles must come from different viewpoints on the selected topic. In other words, the major conclusion of each article should not be identical. They must be argumentative essays.
The paper should be structured as follows:
  • Introduction: Provide an Introduction to your paper. The introduction should include:
    • What the topic is that you’ll be discussing.
    • What the specific problem is associated with the topic.
    • What sources you will be using.
    • What your position is on the problem. This should be articulated in a clearly stated thesis statement at the conclusion of your introductory paragraph. The thesis statement must be bolded and italicized
  • Reconstruct the Arguments: You must reconstruct the major argument from each article.
    • What is each author’s major conclusion? Explain how the author reaches their conclusion.
    • Provide the reasons the author gives in favor of their position.
    • Point out any important argumentative moves in the paper.
    • Note: Do not criticize the arguments at this point. Reserve your criticism for when you develop your position.
  • Position: Next, you must defend your own view on the topic. This may involve agreeing with one position over another, modifying one position, or developing your own argument on the topic.
  • Reasons: Provide your reasons for defending your position.
    • Optional: In defending your own view on the topic, consider including elements from the course. These elements could be an important ethical theory, important ethical distinctions, or another important concept from the course.
  • Objections: Finally, consider two distinct objections to your position. Articulate what the objection is, why it is an objection to the view, and explain how you would respond to the objection. The objection must be a new objection not considered in the selected sources.
  • Conclusion: Provide a conclusion to the paper. Restate your position and indicate problems or questions left unaddressed by your paper. If you were to continue writing on this topic, in which direction would you go?
