CMCE 2456 Soil Mechanics and Laboratory

Fall 2020

Project #1: Desk Study

Due Dates:

Location of your Properties (10%): Monday, November 30, 2020

Objective:

To get familiar with available literature review tools to assess local geology and historical land use. Use preliminary findings and engineering judgement to draw preliminary conclusions with respect to a proposed development.

Important Note:

Each student is required to submit an individual report for this project. Sharing or copying work, or landmark locations between students will not be permitted for this project.

Problem:

You have recently purchased the entire lot of the house/condominium where you were raised. You intend to demolish the structure and build a new state of the art museum dedicated to the life and accomplishments of the lustrous engineer (insert your name here). The planned museum will consist of a 5-story building. The footprint of the building will occupy1/2 of the entire site. The museum foundation will consist of steel and timber piles. Additionally, there will be a small one story building with basement (15 ft) built in the back of the site. The small building will be supported by shallow foundations.

I. Museum: As part of the proposed Museum due diligence, you as the engineer, must have a general understanding of the geology of the area where your Museum will be built. Obtain the following (if available):

1. Local soil survey: (If the address were you were born does not have a soil survey, you must pick another address of someone in your family i.e. uncle, cousin, aunt, grandparent)

Local soil properties:

a. Soil map unit symbol

b. Soil map unit name

c. Typical soil profile for main soil unit

d. Soil classification: USDA texture, USCS and AASHTO, for main soil unit

e. Liquid limit and plasticity index, for main soil unit

f. Existence of calcium carbonate (CaCO3), for main soil unit

g. Soils pH for main soil unit

h. Moist bulk density for main soil unit

i. Cation exchange capacity for main soil unit

Site Development:

j. Annual precipitation

k. Typical slopes

l. Corrosion potential of concrete

m. Corrosion potential of steel

n. Shallow excavation suitability

o. Depth of restrictive feature

p. Frequency of ponding

q. Is the site a good gravel source

2. Local geology:

a. What is the geological formation in your area. Define the characteristics of the geological formation in your area.

b. What is the type of bedrock typical in your area? Are there any potential problems with regards to slopes or other structural features?

3. Soil borings and rock cores:

a. Following the NYC building code determine the quantity and depth of soil borings and rock cores (if needed) for the Museum location only.

II. Ticket Hub: You also plan to develop a ticket hub in Queens to sell tours for your museum. For this purpose you plan to purchase the lot of your favorite Queens hangout, and develop a new building for your ticket hub. Do not pick any landmark buildings or any building that has not changed much in the last 100 years.

1. Find historical Aerial photographs of the ticket hub site (at least four, spread out in time, at least 75 years back). Identify if there are any concerns revealed by the photographs as they relate to your site and/or adjacent areas.

2. Using a local or national library find out the historical use of the lot and what establishments have been in that lot. (i.e. 25, 50, 75,100 years ago)

i. Do the previous establishments pose a concern? (gas station, dry cleaner, dump site, etc.)

III. Preliminary engineering evaluation. Taking into account the findings in your study, draw preliminary conclusion regarding the proposed sites and proposed structures. Are there any issues? Any limiting factors? Will the proposed structures need to be altered? Any precautions that need to be taken during design or construction? Etc.

General Instructions:

1. Hand in address of Museum and Ticket Hub in attached form by November 30, 2020 (10%).

2. Include a Cover Page with your Name, Course #, Project Name, Museum address, Ticket Hub address and Date Submitted.

3. Tabulate your results in a table (-20%). Include all of the items requested, even if they are not available (mark as N/A).

4. Give your recommendations as an engineer for developing the site of your museum. Is it a viable location? Are there any potential problems with design or construction? (1/2 to 1 page)

5. Appendix (separate from the main document). Hand in printouts of screen shots of all of your web finding as well as scans of all data found in historical documents. Provide scans for all of the items requested even if information is not available. Color scanning is preferable.

6. If there is no soil survey for your area pick a family members or friends address for your museum.

7. Presentation will be part of the grade.
