This project aims to develop an overview of the types of employment available for graduates with mathematics and statistics components in their degree. It will take into consideration the following points: The range and types of jobs available Descriptions of the roles of people employed in these areas Places of employment Required skills, experience, qualifications and attributes Current and projected labour market information Internship/traineeship opportunities Graduate opportunities for specialisation and further study Project outcomes: Students will work in groups of up to 5 people, with each group choosing an employment area of interest and obtaining information on the above points for this employment area. The results will be presented as a two page summary which will be posted on UTSOnline so that all students have access to the information which has been gathered by the separate groups. Assessment for the project which will count for 10% of the total assessment for the subject will be based on the two page summary which will be assessed on both the information which has been gathered and the presentation of this information. Gathering information: Aspects of how to approach this project will be given by the Careers Service during the lecture on Monday, 26th August. Resources which you will use to gain information can include: Internet — web sites for companies, research organisations and government departments Books — both available in the library and from the careers service Journals that have job advertisements Newspaper job advertisements Direct contact with employers Contact with employers: Contact with employers is an important area for gathering information, but if you wish to do this you must appoint only one member of your group to liaise with any employers. This person should gather all the questions the group might have before contacting an employer. No other member of the group is to contact an employer. The reason for this is that the people you will be contacting are busy professionals who will not be impressed with UTS or with our graduates if they find they are being distracted by a series of questions from different people. The contact with employers can be through face to face meetings, telephone conversations or email communication to ask questions and discuss industry issues. If you intend holding a face to face meeting, always contact the employer and organise a meeting time. Don’t just arrive and expect to see someone. When phoning, be prepared to concisely explain who you are and what you want to speak about. Let the person know how much time you are likely to need. If organising a phone interview ask if the person has time to answer the questions now or would it be more convenient if you phoned back. If the latter, make a definite time and ensure that you are punctual. If you email, remember that even though you are not an employee you should nonetheless treat this as a formal communication between yourself and the employer. Avoid using any abbreviations, jargon or shorthand. Choice of employment areas and employers: You should select the employment areas you want to investigate early within the time allowed for the project and have it approved by the lecturer so that one area is not being investigated by a large number of groups. Similarly, you should advise your lecturer if you are intending to approach any employers and which employers you intend to contact. Supervision of this will ensure that one employer is not swamped by enquiries and therefore reluctant to talk to you. Due date: The two page summary should be submitted by email by 11 am on 14th October to [email protected] with the subject line of the email being Regression Analysis Careers Project. The body of the email should contain the group members’ names and student ID numbers. It is assumed that all members of the group will contribute equally though possibly differently to the project and so all will receive the same mark.
