Directions: The focus of this chapter was civil rights and civil liberties protected by the U.S. Constitution. The focus of this assignment is Supreme Court rulings related to the freedoms protected by the First Amendment. Choose one of the following Supreme Court cases to research and present on:
- Lynch v. Donnelly (1984)
- Van Orden v. Perry (2005)
- McCollum v. Board of Education (1948)
- Epperson v. Arkansas (1968)
- Lee v. Weisman (1992)
- Schenck v. United States (1919)
- Yates v. United States (1957)
- NAACP v. Alabama (1958)
- Texas v. Johnson (1989)
Consider the following questions as you research and choose your court case:
- What are the facts of the case (who were the parties and what First Amendment Freedom was involved?)?
- Why is this case important? Did it redefine a First Amendment right? Protect the rights of a specific group?
- What was the finding of the Court? Did they expand or limit a protected freedom?
- What reasoning did the Court provide for their decision? Did they reference specific passages from the Constitution or previous cases?
- How did the decision impact the public? Was a law overturned?
Once you have chosen your case and finished your research, complete the following project:
- Use the Presentation tool to create a presentation about the case, why it is important, how it affects your First Amendment rights, and how it changed the Constitution and U.S. history. Include images, audio, video, and links to outside resources when possible.
