Scenario
Ameriwidget, a medium-sized bicycle manufacturing company, has recently seen a dip in sales and shipments. As part of an attempt to determine the source of this dip, the companys CEO has decided to hire a logistics consultant to examine the logistics processes in place at Ameriwidget. Your firm was selected by Ameriwidget, and you have been sent to create a report on the companys logistics planning processes, in addition to performing basic qualitative and quantitative analyses to inform the companys logistics planning.
Directions
You will be composing a report, analyzing the data provided by Ameriwidgets CEO in order to inform the companys logistics planning processes. In this report, ensure that you are addressing the following elements:
- Fundamentals: Before your analysis of the companys data, the CEO has asked you to open your report with a section on the fundamentals of logistics planning in order to ensure that Ameriwidgets staff understand the importance of logistics planning to business success. In this section of your report, address the following elements:
- Describe the goals of logistics and supply chain management and the relationship between them. As you describe these goals, consider the following:
- What is logistics management?
- What is supply chain management?
- What are the key differentiators between the two?
- How do logistics and supply chain management drive business decisions?
- Describe how qualitative and quantitative analyses are used in logistics planning. In your description, give examples of qualitative and quantitative analyses used in logistics planning, and address the following:
- What is qualitative analysis? What is quantitative analysis?
- How are insights from these analyses leveraged in making business decisions?
- Describe the goals of logistics and supply chain management and the relationship between them. As you describe these goals, consider the following:
- Analysis: The CEO of Ameriwidget has provided you with data and has asked you to apply qualitative and quantitative analysis to existing logistics processes in order to determine planning needs for Ameriwidget going forward. In order to assist Ameriwidget with its logistics planning, the CEO has requested that you focus on customer demand and the capacity of Ameriwidgets production lines. Using historical and projected data provided by the CEO, address the following:
- Analyze historical data on customer demand to determine production needs. Ameriwidgets CEO has informed you that they are anticipating a 7% increase in each month of sales, based on the previous year. Use that data to calculate the anticipated sales for each month. The CEO has provided you with an Ameriwidget Data spreadsheet to assist in calculating the anticipated demand. You do not, however, need to submit the entire spreadsheet; simply copy the resulting anticipated demand into your report. Note: Be sure that your calculations are based on a five-day work week.
- Determine the capacity of production lines. Ameriwidgets CEO has asked you to perform a series of small calculations in order to determine the capacity of the production lines used by Ameriwidget. Use the data provided in the Ameriwidget Data and Ameriwidget Info spreadsheet to make these calculations, and then submit them as part of your logistics analysis. In order to determine the capacity of Ameriwidgets production lines, do the following:
- Determine the current production capacity for each manufacturing line.
- Determine the monthly utilization rate for each production line.
- Recommendations: Following your analysis of the information provided, recommend process changes based on quantitative and qualitative analysis, and justify these recommendations with reference to your quantitative and qualitative analysis. Finally, you have been asked by the CEO to recommend a method for monitoring and measuring the supply chain efficiency of Ameriwidget. Be sure to use data from both sources to support your recommendations. Using the information provided in the Ameriwidget Info and Ameriwidget Data spreadsheets, address the following elements in your recommendations:
- Is Ameriwidgets production capacity sufficient to meet anticipated demand?
- What steps should Ameriwidget take to meet the variations in demand?
- What steps could Ameriwidget take to better manage its suppliers and inventory?
- What could Ameriwidget do to better manage its warehouse utilization?

Write a 1000- to 1200-word report that addresses the fundamentals of logistics management, analyzes Ameriwidgets existing logistics areas, and also makes recommendations for process improvements.
