The Domesday Book site (http://opendomesday.org) allows you to explore this kingdom-wide survey of land, people, and animals gathered in 1086. Use the map to choose a few entries to look at (randomly, or pick a place you know): one strategy would be to compare a northern and a southern entry. Write below (about 150 words) your reflections on the kinds of data those who compiled Domesday Book gathered, and why. How were people in your entries categorized? Were there changes of tenant or landholder between 1066 and 1086 (look if the change seems to be from English to Norman)? What was the relative value of the property in 1086 compared to 1066? Are there any other kinds of changes or notable features? Include the URLs for the place(s) you looked at.

Note: the currency they use worked like this:

one pound (£) = 20 shillings

1 shilling (s) = 12 pennies (denarii, or d.)
