I included the video clip The Awkward Conversation in this modules’ Overview of materials and readings because of recent events highlighting the importance of mental health in our society. This includes the number of people diagnosed with substance use disorder (especially prescription pain medicines), and suicides of well-known people (e.g., Kate Spade, Anthony Bourdain), suicides and attempted suicides by children as young as 11 years of age, and epidemic of interpersonal violence including urban violence and school shootings. I want to help increase the awareness of the need for mental health care and help to remove the stigma often associated with talking about mental health issues.
