Reflective Practice through Reflective Journaling

Reflection or reflective writing is the purposeful and recursive contemplation of thoughts, feelings, and happenings that pertain to significant experiences, known as critical incidents or exemplars. It is not an end onto itself but rather a means to provide deeper understandings to the writer.  These deeper meanings tend to occur when least anticipated! These are the “ah-ha” moments. If you have engaged in journaling in the past, you may be familiar with the knowing that emerges from writing. Ultimately reflective writing is a form of self-care and offers a forum for critical thinking. Of upmost importance, there is no one way to do reflective writing! Be open to the experience and be flexible! Reflective journaling should be done in a quiet setting or a place in which you can construct experiences without distraction. Remember, journaling “happens”. Do not censor or spend time “choosing” the right words or language. Keep your pen moving across the page. Length is at your discretion. Some journaling will entail many pages while others may only elicit a brief commentary. Write until you have totally written about the experience.

While there are numerous “ways” to engage in reflective writing, Baker (1996) offers a semi-structured model for reflective journaling. This model can be utilized with participants of varying familiarity with reflective writing. The four steps briefly are listed as follows:

  1. Identification
    1. Selection of an experience or critical incidence
      1. The “experience” will find you!
      2. The experience that comes to mind is the one perhaps for which you need to journal and engage in reflective writing.
  • There is no one way to select an experience for which to write.
  1. Basically, what comes to mind is what is of significance to you!
  1. Description
    1. Reflection upon the experience
    2. A detailing of the events around the experience
    3. What are your thoughts and feelings?
    4. Are there bodily sensations? Feelings?
  2. Significance
    1. What personal meaning do you construe from this experience?
    2. Reflect back in your personal history…Is there a similar experience? (Perhaps this is the reason as to why this experience stands out for you.)
  3. Implications
    1. How did this experience impact you? What perhaps did you learn?
    2. Are there transformative qualities present?
    3. Are there internal changes in the ways in which you think and react?
    4. If you were to experience a similar venue at a later time or place, what may have changed for you? How might you approach a similar situation?
    5. Are there lingering questions that came out of this experience for you?

Please note, that this model is simply a guide. Not every question needs to be addressed!

Cue Questions for Journaling

  1. Select an experience that “calls to you”. Why do you think this stood out for you?
  2. Describe the setting or place of the experience.
  3. Are you an active participant or an observer? Are you engaged with someone in conversation? Observation? Are you alone or with others?
  4. As you describe the experience describe your bodily sensations. What were you thinking? What were you feeling? Are there feelings of comfort or being “out of place”?
  5. What was your experience of time? Did time “stop” or “stand still”? Why?
  6. After writing about this experience, are there questions that come to mind or feel “unsettled” for you?

Reflective practice is foundational to the study of nursing history. Throughout the readings you have engaged in this form of critical thinking! Reflective practice allows change through a slightly different venue for writing. A short guide has been provided for you in this folder.

Reflective Writing

Reflective writing is defined as a description of thoughts and feelings about what has happened in a significant patient care experience (Kennison & Misselwitz, 2002). For the purposes of this writing, we will reflect upon the impact of learning about the history of nursing in this course upon your unique philosophy of nursing practice. Examination of nursing practice is foundational to all aspects of the roles of nursing by self-evaluation and reflective practice. Practitioners of nursing must analyze, evaluate, and revise knowledge based upon personal understandings of practice. As noted through historical narratives and analysis of societal influences throughout time, it can be ascertained that while the practice of nursing has changed in terms of psychomotor skills, theories for practice and roles, perhaps the fundamental premises of nursing—caring and compassion—has remained a constant underlying aspect for practice.

Kennison, M. & Misselwitz, S. (2002). Evaluating reflective writing for appropriateness, fairness, and consistency. Nursing Education Perspectives, 23(5), 238-242.

Provide a posting regarding your perceptions of changes in the way you view nursing having completed readings and participation in this course. Please provide specific examples as well as discussion regarding to caring and compassion in your original posting and response to a peer.
