Diverse Family Reflection Paper Details and Grading Rubric


Students will be required to write a 5 page diversefamily reflection paper (not including title page or reference list) aboutintersectionality issues and diverse family patterns in a culture that they areinterested in.  For this assignment, student will conduct an interviewwith someone from a specific culture.  This can be someone from your ownculture, or another culture that you have always wanted to learn moreabout.  If studying your own family culture, informal discussions andinterviews with immediate family can provide the data with which to exploreissues that have arisen in the required readings and other coursecontent.  Students can also choose to interview someone from a differentculture (e.g., friend, co-worker, etc.) to obtain the data with which toexplore issues in a culture other than their own.  Students will berequired to evidence mastery of the vocabulary, concepts, and ideas learnedthroughout the course in their diverse family reflection paper. Requiredreadings throughout the course (textbooks and journal articles) should be usedas citations and references in the paper. Outside sources of information arenot required for this assignment. Please ensure that your paper adheres to APAformatting guidelines (APA style title page, headings, in-text citations, andreference page; 1 inch page margins; 12 point font; double-spaced; etc. Yourpurpose is to reflect on the family dynamics and structure of a family within aspecific culture.  You must interview familymember(s) or a person in another family to obtain theinformation required for the paper.

        You will listen for information about family issues such as: youthidentity, immigration status, economics; the role that class, age, gender,sexual orientation, race/ethnicity plays within this culture; structural (e.g.,LAT, LGBTQ*, fragmented) and social issues (e.g., poverty, aging, violence)that affect the family; and you will connect this information with thetextbooks and other required readings used in the course.
