You may write on any work(s) we have read in this course. If you choose to write on a text on which you have already written, you must find an entirely different topic.
The Purpose of Research
The purpose of your research is to open avenues of approach to texts and perspectives on them that add to those you have encountered in class. Use your research to stimulate your own thinking. Do not write a report or a summary of your research. Instead, make your own argument, tapping your sources where they are helpful.

Sources
You must use at least 6 sources in addition to texts we read in class. Your sources should be articles from peer-reviewed journals, chapters or essays from books, or a combination of these. You may use articles from refereed journals that CSI’s library subscribes to online. Sources should include at least three articles on literature. You may also use historical sources or sources on music or art.

You should use MLA format.

Carefully site sources for all ideas that are not your own, even if you are paraphrasing them. Also cite sources for all quotations. See syllabus for full definition of plagiarism.

1. I understand that plagiarism includes “borrowing or purchasing assignments (including but not limited to term papers, essays and reports) and other written assignments; . . . copying the work of others and submitting it as [my] own; and misappropriating the knowledge of others.”*
2. I understand that restating the ideas of others in my own words also constitutes plagiarism unless I properly cite the sources of those ideas.
3. I understand that “failure to [properly cite sources], intentionally or unintentionally, constitutes plagiarism.”*
4. I understand that I am not to use secondary sources for the two short essays for this course, and that GradeSaver, Shmoop, Cliffnotes, Sparknotes, Enotes and other study guides are all secondary sources.
5. I realize that the study guides mentioned above are not considered appropriate sources for college research essays, so I should not use them.
6. I understand that when I use secondary sources, I must cite my sources both in the body of an essay and in a Works Cited page at the end.
