Research Paper: Annotated Bibliography

Purpose:

To reinforce effective summary/paraphrase skills and to offer an opportunity to practice citation skills.

Assignment:

Your task is to write an Annotated Bibliography using at least five sources, at least  two of which have to come from viewpoints opposed to your own working thesis.  Each source will be listed using formal MLA citation (just like in a Works Cited page).  Following each entry, you will write a review that does the following three tasks: 1) summarized the authors argument; 2) evaluates the strength of the argument and the credibility of the source of the text; 3) explains how you plan to use the article in your own writing.  You may do this in one large paragraph, or three shorter ones.  Somewhere in your discussion of the source you will be required to use one direct quote of a sentence or a phrase from the source article, cited correctly and integrated into the paragraph.

Resources:

MLA citation, 8th edition:   The 8th edition of the MLA citation system is based on the concept that any form of communication, from a text to a book to a broadcast, is a container of information.  So rather than worry about genres of text (as in the 7th edition of the MLA), you simply have to discern between the name of the text and the name of its container.  Here is the order of information required by the MLA.  A more full discussion can be found on the front page of the Purdue Online Writing Lab (OWL) MLA Formatting and Style Guide at https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/01/ (Links to an external site.).

An annotated bibliography is basically a list of sources combined with a review of the article.  Each article is listed with the full MLA bibliographic citation, and the review of the article summarizes the content and assesses the value (or credibility) of the argument.  For this assignment, I am asking that you also evaluate the credibility of the source of the article, whether it is a journal, a newspaper, a website, etc.  A full discussion is available on the Purdue OWL here: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/614/03/ (Links to an external site.).

Submit your annotated bibliography to Canvas by the deadline.  The only acceptable formats are PDF and DOCX.
