Assignment: Building an Individual Research Plan and Mock Proposal

With the course materials as a resource, you will build an individual research plan and mock proposal (2000 words) that supports an applied research inquiry and managerial decision relevant to your workplace, an organization, or an industry with which you are familiar. Your research plan should address the following:

Write an introduction that includes a brief description of the problem situation and its context;
Precisely outline the purpose statement;
Define the research question(s) or hypothesis that reflects the purpose statement;
Include key highlights from the relevant literature that explains the importance of the problem; indicate the management disciplines on which you will build the theoretical foundation that will support your research inquiry;
Discuss the design of your research inquiry; explain the research approach and methods that you will apply to address the research question; explain if an internship would be required to conduct your research;
Discuss how theory would be used in this research;
Outline the key variables involved in your research and draw an influence chart (concept map) which illustrates how the research question is addressed throughout the design of your research.
Outline the expected outcomes of the research and relationship to both the managerial decision captured by your question and the theory you outlined; and
Discuss the overall research quality in terms of validity and reliability and outline potential limitations for your research.

On the cover page of the report, indicate the number of words of your report, which should not exceed the 2000 words NOT including the cover page, reference pages, table of contents, and appendices. This essay should be an evidence-based piece of writing. All sources must be referenced in APA format and a bibliography must be included at the end of the essay. You are expected to incorporate at least 5 -7 academic articles that are different from the required readings in the course.

You will also develop a PowerPoint to share the basics of your research plan (3-5 slides)

MGM 580 Assignment #3 Template: Individual research plan and mock proposal

(2000 words)

This assignment requires you to design a research plan and proposal for an applied research inquiry relevant to your workplace, an organization, or an industry with which you are familiar. Please note: You are not required, nor are you permitted, to conduct primary research (e.g., interviews, surveys, focus groups).

Your research plan should address the following questions (please use the bold headings below to structure your assignment). The questions are prompts for you to consider but please write in full sentence and use paragraph form. The final assignment should reflect a cohesive piece of writing.

Introduction (~250 words)

A brief description of the problem situation and its context;
Key highlights from the relevant literature that explains the importance of the problem;
Purpose statement (one or two sentences that clearly identify the purpose of your study) The purpose of this study is to __________________(understand, explain)… or for quantitative studies: the purpose of this study is to test _________________ (theory) that describes the relationship between _______________ (independent variable) and __________ (dependent variable) (for quantitative studies). Mixed-methods problem statements will vary depending on the nature of your research project.

Research Question or Hypotheses (~50 words)

Define the research question(s) or hypothesis that reflects the purpose statement;
Recall a qualitative research question includes one over-arching question and 2-5 sub-questions. For example:

How can global companies address sustainability associated with climate change.

 How is globalization affecting the workforce?
What is the cause of employee turnover?
What are the best practices for employee retention in global companies?

Recall , quantitative research questions or hypotheses often take the following form:

What is the frequency and variation of  _______________ (variable) for ______________ (participants of your study)?
Does  _____________ (name of theory) explain the relationship between _________________ (independent variable) and ________________ (dependent variable), controlling for the effects of ________________ (mediating variables)?

Or, if you are testing hypothesis, your null hypothesis will look something like:

There is no significant difference between _______________ (the control and experimental groups on the independent variable) on _______________________ (dependent variable).

You would then state some alternative hypotheses.

Literature Review and Theoretical Framework (~500 words)

Review the literature
Build a narrative based on your literature map and identify the gap in the literature that you intend to address through your research.

Discuss how theory would be used in your research.
Recall the different uses of theory in qualitative, quantitative and mixed-methods studies.

Research Approach and Methodology (~750 words)

Explain the research approach (your worldview, research design and methods) you will apply to address the research question and identify key variables. Explain how the research question is addressed throughout the design of your research.

What is the research approach (qualitative, quantitative or mixed methods study) and how is this informed by your worldview?
What is the proposed design of your research? For example, if you are proposing a qualitative study, will you use a case study, ethnography, grounded theory? If you are proposing a mixed-methods study, is it an exploratory sequential design (qualitative research first, then quantitative analysis)?
What will primary research cover? What general information do you need to collect to fill the gaps in the existing literature and secondary sources so that you have the appropriate information to address your research question?
What primary research methods (e.g., experiments, surveys, interviews, document analysis) will you use?

Discuss the overall research quality in terms of validity and reliability and outline potential limitations for your research.
What ethical issues do you anticipate with the design of your research and how would you address them? For example, if there are potential conflicts of interest you would indicate that this conflict would be disclosed to participants.
Expected outcomes and significance of the research (~250 words)

What contribution does your research make to the managerial decision captured by your question and the theory you outlined?
What is the significance of the research to other target audiences (which could include policymakers, businesses, individual decision-makers, the broader public, academics).  (e.g., This understanding will contribute to knowledge more broadly about ________. For practitioners, this research will _______________. For policymakers, this research will ____________________.

 Outline the key variables involved in your research and draw an influence chart (concept map) which illustrates how the research question is addressed throughout the design of your research.
