Scholarly evaluation instruction
-Read the article and submit a 1 page write up
1. Identify the main claim of the study and any other claims you thought is important.
– Claim: There may be multiple points the source is trying to get across, so identify in
general what is the idea they are trying to get their audience to know. Maybe the source
makes all sorts of claims but you are only interested in one, that is fine, focus on that one
point.
2. Describe the evidence used to support the claim by making specific comments about
methods used in the study – Be sure to also EXPLAIN the Strengths/Weaknesses of
those methods (IMPORTANT)
– Evidence: How does the author/organization go about supporting the claim they make?
(How do they try to convince the audience that it is true?). We will discuss sources of
evidence in class. Make note of if they use intuitive stories or testimonials, make
reference to sources of authority, adhere to traditional beliefs, make a logical argument
by putting ideas together to come to conclusions, or site data or research.
– Evaluate: Consider if you believe the claim based on how they supported it. First who
was the source and why would one believe this source? Then, what aspects of the
evidence were strong and why? What were weak, why? Overall what ideas would you
take going forward on this issue/topic?
3. Comments about the topic – Your thoughts on the topic, results, or significance of the
issue.

NOTE THAT:
1. For scholarly sources, you do not need to specify the journal the article comes from.
We only do that for non-scholarly sources to alert the reader that the citation is a
non-scholarly source. It is assumed that citations are scholarly sources unless you
specify.
2. For any of the sources do not include the author first name(s). Cite by author last name
and year only.
3. Do not include titles of articles in your writing. Refer to article by author last name
and year.
4. Remember, claims for scholarly sources are the study’s conclusions. Evidence is how
the study was conducted and some specific results.
5. Put more effort in evaluating the evidence. Explain what about the study makes the
conclusions believable or not?
6. Lastly, do not write using “I” as in “I think the study had a strong sample” instead write
“The study had a strong sample”
