On Beachboard there is a selection from sociologist Dalton Conley’s memoir Honky (2000), where he describes his experience growing up white in a predominately non-white neighborhood in New York. In the selection you have, Conley primarily describes his first days at a new elementary school in Greenwich Village, which consists of predominately White, middle class kids and represents a stark contrast to his experiences with primarily Black and Latino working class kids back home in the Lower East Side. Central to his experience are issues of both Race and Class. In this paper, I am asking you to analyze this selection and answer the following question: In what ways were race and class important at this stage in Dalton Conley’s life?
In order to answer the central question, you will need to devote some of your paper to defining both of the key concepts, Race and Class, separately before you analyze the various ways each was important in Dalton Conley’s life. Keep your analysis focused on the selection about Conley’s life and the materials from this course on Race and Class.
As a conclusion to your paper you must decide whether Race or Class was the most important factor shaping Conley’s life. You cannot choose both! You must choose one or the other. Your essays will be graded on the strength of your analysis, regardless whether you choose Race or Class, and how well you are able to incorporate concepts from lecture and the readings for this course into your paper.
Your paper should be 4-5 pages, printed, 12-point font, double-spaced, and spell-checked. While your grade will be based primarily on your content and the strength of your analysis, organization and grammar will also be part of your grade. Do not wait until the last minute to do this assignment. I highly suggest that you outline your paper and after you have written your essay, give yourself enough time to re-read and proofread your paper.
There is no need to use any outside materials for this paper. You are expected to use materials from class to help flesh out your definitions of these social categories and to back up your analysis of the selection from Conley. If you do decide to use any outside sources, please attach a bibliography that lists your additional sources. If you use only class materials, there is no need for a bibliography. Be sure to use parenthetical documentation for any references to readings or lecture, i.e. (Barnes 2020) for lecture or (Conley 72).
This paper is due via dropbox on beachboard on Nov. 30th. Late papers will lose 1/3 of a grade for each day they are late (i.e. from A to A- to B+, etc.).
