This research paper will develop a strong argument about Senna’s Caucasia with creative close readingsThis paper will be 7-8 pages in length, double-spaced, one-inch margins, 12-point Times New Roman font. You are asked to demonstrate your ability to find two reputable secondary sources, analyze and understand each source’s main argument, and show how you are building upon or contradicting each source’s argument in your paper’s argument. Please note that a reputable secondary source will generally run 15-30 pages; it should also be a peer-reviewed work of literary criticism—so, an article or book chapter on Senna’s novel, not a work of history or sociology—found through the academic databases that I will review with you. The secondary sources should be incorporated in a useful and organic manner in the paper. It is important that your argument is primary, not the argument of the other critic. This is hard, so feel free to ask for help.

The goal for the papers is to construct an interesting and convincing argument. This means that plot summary must be kept to a minimum. Try to stay away from any themes or passages discussed in great depth in class discussions. Define key terms and be as clear as possible. It’s also important to be specific; do not be afraid to narrow your focus. Strong analyses, which are grounded in creative close readings and a careful engagement with the texts, will be important. Make sure to acknowledge and argue against any compelling counterarguments. It is essential to explain the significance of the argument. Finally, proofread your paper and make sure that your writing is clear, grammatically correct, and organized. A successful paper will include a strong argumentative thesis, creative and convincing close readings, as well as a larger claim about the significance of that close reading.
