Short Essay
The goal of this essay is for you to compare and contrast several different religions, focusing on one specific aspect of religion. This short essay should be 400-500 words, which is approximately 3 paragraphs. That means your paper should be focused and stick to substantive points. Read the instructions below carefully. You must rely exclusively on course material. If the topic you’re interested in is not covered in our textbook, lectures, or the resources I provided online through Canvas, please choose another topic that is.
How to go about this essay:
First, choose one aspect of religion that interests you. The following are examples of aspects of religion that you can choose to focus on: scripture, ritual, divinity, leadership, the soul, morality, origin stories, death. If you have another idea for an aspect to focus on, please consult with me first. Choose one aspect of religion to focus on.
Next, choose three religions that we have already studied in class and compare and/or contrast how they relate to the aspect of religion you chose. This must be based on religions that we have studied so far in this course (which excludes Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and New Religious Movements). You may structure the essay any way you like, but be sure to relate all three religions to the specific topic you chose.
An important note about citations:
If you quote anything, use quotation marks and include a footnote with your source. If you are drawing generally from the textbook but without quotation, you should still use a footnote to cite the page(s) in the text book from which you took your information. You do not need to cite the lecture or the PowerPoints (but don’t quote the PowerPoints, because I wrote them, and you shouldn’t quote me to me). If you’re not sure how to insert footnotes, please please please come see me in my office on Monday or Wednesday. I would be delighted to teach you this.
How to do really, really well:
A sophisticated paper will include some further analysis on your comparison and contrast. This analysis can relate to why this element of religion is meaningful; how it came to be that different traditions are similar or different regarding this element; or how the similarities and/or differences tell you something important about that tradition.
What your grade will be based on:
• substantial engagement with the prompt
• accuracy in any of the traditions or concepts you refer to
• academic style (including spelling and grammar, structure, clarity, sophistication)
Style and submission instructions:
Papers should be typed, double-spaced, in Times New Roman 12 pt. font with 1 inch (standard) margins. Papers must have a heading including your name, the date, the course, and the instructor’s name. Papers should also have a title.
All papers must be submitted on TurnItIn through Canvas.
No paper may include any writing that has been previously submitted for another class. The student’s paper should have a 0% similarity classification from TurnItIn. Plagiarism, intentional or otherwise, will result in a grade of F.
