Geologic time: a field trip to the Pre-CambrianFor this week’s forum, pick one of the time periods described in the lecture and illustrated in the geologic time scale. The title says “a field trip to the Pre-Cambrian”, but you can pick any time period (except the present). Pretend to are taking an expedition to that time (do some research). What will you need to bring with you? Will you need any special equipment to travel with (in the ocean perhaps?)breathe, or survive (protection against large/different lifeforms). What will you see there? What types of lifeforms? Why did you pick that particular time? Could you find any illustrations of what life was like during that time?( NOTE: Length can be 300 – 500 words )Instructor’s example post: For many years I have been involved with a field paleontology program in El Golfo Mexico, with researchers from Arizona Western College, and the Page Museum (La Brea Tar Pits). The fossils found in the badlands near El Golfo (the pictures are in the lecture), are of megafauna which existed two million years ago: woolly mammoths, saber-toothed cats, dire wolves, Zebras, Giant camels, sloths, miniature horses, Giant Condors(see picture below). This time period was during an ice age, so the climate was cooler and wetter, supporting these larger animals. If I were to travel to this time period I would bring warm clothes, camping gear, and some way to protect myself from the wolf packs and saber -tooth cats! I would be wary around large herds of woolly mammoths. The Giant sloths would be slow moving and probably not too dangerous if left alone. I would not need any special equipment to breathe as the atmosphere would be similar to ours. I would need to be careful not to get stuck in tar pits! That is how many fossils were preserved, that you can see at the Page museum. I would like to travel to this time period, because it would be neat to see the actual animals after so many trips collecting small pieces of bones that came from those animals.
