Week 1 Discussion Prompt:
- Week 1 Prompt: This week’s discussion will focus on the terminology used to describe the basic sections or components of a research paper. Generally, research papers include the following components: Title, Abstract, Introduction, the Literature Review, Study Problem/Objectives, the Research Question, Design, Sample, Measures, Data Collection Method, Data Analytic Plan, Results, and Discussion.
- Using the two Quantitative and Qualitative Studies (“Q&Q” studies) that you will critique for Assignment #3 and #4, for your initial postings, each student will offer a brief description of three of the standard sections or components of a research paper and compare and contrast whatyou find in the two papers.

Descriptions should define what information is covered in each section, how the information is formatted, and what characteristics you would look for to rate/critique whether the components were “good” quality and why. Remember to refer to the Helpful Resources on page 4 in this syllabus, to underline the component that you are describing, and to cite your definition and critique criteria from the Babbie text, the USC Lib Guide or the APA text (including page numbers).
Note: Remember that while different studies may use slightly different headings, they will usually contain the same standardized content (i.e. some papers will use the heading of “introduction” to be a brief description of the topic and the importance, while other papers will use the same heading to include the topic, importance and the literature review).
This is an important assignment that will build a foundation for your future assignments. Working together, students should be able to create a detailed description of the basic sections of a research paper AND a list of the criteria for each section that can be used to critique the quality of a research paper.
