My two sources for citations:1) Laster Pirtle_Racial Capitalism  2) https://theconversation.com/is-your-neighborhood-raising-your-coronavirus-risk-redlining-decades-ago-set-communities-up-for-greater-danger-138256. At the center of this course are questions about how structural inequalities shape opportunities to be healthy and well (as well as what “healthy and well” mean to us). Your final paper for the class will ask you to explore these questions based on interview data which you will collect. You will have two options for completing this assignment. The first option will focus on understanding the ways that structural inequalities are shaping experiences of the pandemic. The second option will focus on understanding the ways that structural inequalities shape the experience of feeding ones family. (I select option I) Option 1 requires that you do two interviews with individuals whom you expect to have had very different experiences of the COVID-19 pandemic. Only one of these individuals can be related to you. The second individual should be chosen to gain a contrasting perspective. The rationale for whom you select to interview must be grounded in a sociological perspective; that is, you should select two people who are different from each other in terms of their location in social structures and/or aspects of their social identities (e.g., race, ethnicity, SES, nationality, or occupation – as examples). Written Work: Rather than asking you to answer specific questions (as in the previous assignment), your task in this assignment is to develop a thesis that is 1) supported by your data (from your interview(s), and; 2) makes connections between your data and the course readings. You must quote directly from your interviews, as these are your data or evidence. Using some of the course readings as a lens for analyzing your data is a recommended strategy. To complete your assignment, you will turn in 1) your paper (6-8 pages); 2) your interview guide(s); 3) at least 5 pages of transcript from each interview. You will have to combine these documents into one file, to upload to LATTE. Please do not turn in your paper via Google docs. For Options 1& 2 — Describe the Interview: • Whom did you interview? • How did you select this person or persons? What was your (sociologically informed) rationale? • What was your experience of doing each interview? Thesis • What thesis did you develop based on your interview data? Be sure to state this clearly! Guiding Questions for Option 1: • In general, what has been their experience of the COVID-19 pandemic? o Where were they when it began? Where have they lived during the pandemic? • What effects, if any, has the pandemic had on their health and/or the health of family members? • What effects, if any, has the pandemic had on their work life (including whether they have lost a job, been able to work from home, etc.)? • What effects, if any, has the pandemic had on their family life (including whether they have been sheltering in place for weeks or months)? • What effects, if any, has the pandemic had on their experiences of religious holidays, celebrations, or other aspects of communal life? • What strategies have they used for staying mentally and physically healthy during this time? • What have they learned, about themselves or the world, during this time? • What aspects of their social location/identity do they mention in describing their experience? For example, do they talk about where they live and/or work? The composition of their family (which might also include whether they have family members who are at high-risk)? Their race, ethnicity, gender, social class, or other social identity (which might include experiences of racism)? Guiding Questions for Option 2: • In general, what was their experience of feeding their family? • How was it decided that they would take primary responsibility for food in their household? Or, was this responsibility shared? If so, how? If not, why not? Did responsibility for food in their household ever shift or change between family members? If so, how? If not, why not? • Where did they shop? What challenges, if any, did they encounter in obtaining the food that s/he wanted to buy? What strategies did they use to meet these challenges? • How did they decide what food to prepare for the family? • What was their experience of being responsible for feeding their family? • Were there holidays or other occasions that involved special foods/cooking/meals? How were these accomplished? • How does this person feel about their work in feeding their family? • What aspects of their social location/identity do they mention in describing their experience? For example, do they talk about where they live and/or work? The composition of their family? Their race, ethnicity, gender, social class, or other social identity? For Options 1& 2 — Reflection: • What did you learn from this interview(s)? What, if anything, was surprising to you? What, if anything, resonated with course readings? • What themes, concerns, issues or further research questions developed from this interview(s)? How are these connected to course readings? • In what ways, if any, have your interview data changed your thinking about topics we’ve discussed in this class (e.g., health inequities, social determinants of health, racism as a public health issue, racial capitalism, gender, food access/justice/food ways, etc.). Your thoughtful and accurate use of course readings will be part of the evaluation of your paper (i.e., this is the equivalent of a “final exam” for SOC 83a). Be sure to reference at least three course readings from weeks 9-16, provide complete citations to each (author’s last name, year: page #), and include a bibliography of all works cited. Please consult the syllabus for additional course policies re: papers.
