Initial Response: Initial responses should be no less than 300 words in length not including your reference(s) and supported by at least one reference (aside from the textbook). Initial responses are due no later than 11:55 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Day 3 of each week. This allows time for other students to respond to your initial response. Please be aware that just “cutting and pasting” sections of articles (in lieu of writing an original initial post) is not acceptable and will negatively impact your grade.

Should college athletes be paid? In 2018, the LSU football team made a profit of around $56.1 million.  Their expenses were $30.1 million.  Their basketball team made $1.6 million, and LSU has one of the only national baseball teams to make a profit. They earned half a million.  No other sports at LSU made money.

You are to look for a scientific, peer-reviewed research article on this topic.  The best place is the library or PubMed. Do not report on a peer-reviewed review paper on the topic. A review paper summarizes several original research papers.  You can use a review to help you find a scientific study.  Also, a research study paper usually has the following sections: abstract, introduction, methods, results, conclusions, figures and tables. A review paper does not have these sections.

In your initial Forum post:

· list your selected article

· provide the reference for your chosen article

· describe the study and the results

· state what the study concludes

· evaluate the article. Do you think the study made appropriate conclusions from its data? Was the study designed correctly to address the hypothesis?

· Finally, provide your opinion on the matter. Be sure to justify your position.

What problems and roadblocks are you encountering writing your research paper? Here is the perfect place to share, vent (keep it professional), and get help.  Don’t be bashful because there is probably at least one student having a similar problem. Maybe they have a solution, or someone who did not have the problem can offer advice. Or maybe you would like someone to read your paper and provide comment. This forum is an excellent place for you to reach out and find someone to provide assistance.

(Example of the roadblocks when writing my paper.)

The article I chose is, “Moral/Ethical Analysis of Performance Enhancement in Sports.” I found the article in the APUS TEFRY Library.  I picked this article because it touches on the very sensitive and ethical issue of performance enhancement in sports. The authors apply the ethical perspective of utilitarian theory and deontology theory which provide a strong framework on how society views what is right or wrong. Interestingly, the authors also posit the concept of self-duty which can be a form of breakthrough to ensure that all athletes cease from falling under the pressure of performance enhancement to win. I searched the article by inputting keywords, “Ethical issues in sports” and chose the peer reviewed category.  This article effectively contributes to the research topic because it discusses the issue of enhancement in sports which a serious ethical matter within the ethical framework and actually integrates real life athletes whose careers have been damaged because of the scandal of performance enhancement. The variables being explored include regulation of use of performance enhancement drugs, use of performance enhancement drugs by athletes and the present ethical frameworks that govern such actions in sports. The hypothesis being tested by the authors is whether there is centrally moral question or not or if it is just a medical or empirical question.

Ok Will,

My major red flag with this is what do they mean by performance enhancement? If i use my glasses, is that performance enhancement? What if I take my thyroid meds, is that performance enhancement? Or an advil to shrink the swelling?

Did they make it clear as to what they considered the problem within performance enhancement that they want to look at? From a coaching standpoint I am always looking to enhance my player’s performances. Not all of them are ethically or legally wrong.

What are your thoughts?

Good afternoon all,

I was happy to see this topic as a forum due to its prevalence in the media lately. The article I chose is titled, “Pay for play: the financial value of NCAA football players”. The articles main purpose was to convince readers that college athletes should be paid to play college sports. The article broke down recruitment from major NCAA football conferences.

The study used all incoming freshman that are going into college as the participants of the study. The study used the (5 star – 1 star) ranking system from 2004-2013, using 247sports.com ranking system.  This means that the best high school prospects in the country are considered 5 star recruits and then the ranking system goes down from there to 4 star, 3 star, 2 star, and 1 star. In football on average there is 32 five-star recruits, 234 four-star recruits, 1,219 three-star recruits, and 1,196 one and two-star recruits. The article conducts a study that compares the amount of five star- one-star recruits an NCAA team gets on average compared to how much revenue that football team makes per year. The study found that a fair compensation for the recruits would be, $799,000 for five-star recruits, $361,000 for four-star recruits, $29,000 for three star recruits and $21,000 for two and one star recruits. The article showed that the more high level recruits a college gets per year, the likelihood of them winning games is in direct correlation to that. Also, the more games a team wins on average per year, the more it makes in sponsors. Additionally, the study found that on average a college receives approximately 1.37 million dollars in donations for each five-star recruit it gets per year. The colleges with the most recruits were the SEC and the BIG12.

I believe the study did draw an accurate conclusion based on data and results. It’s evident that the higher star a recruit is, the more money that recruit will generate for the team. Some colleges profits for sports are in the billion’s of dollars per year, and that is even after paying for recruitment, giving the students free tuition, room and board etc.. Therefore, the article did a good job showing that the school is profiting from a players ability to perform and play well.

Personally, I do not think the schools should pay players. However, I do believe student-athletes should be able to market themselves and get sponsorships on their own while still in school and playing for the university.

Best,

Warsh
