Description

FINAL PAPER INSTRUCTIONS AND GUIDELINES Objective:  Produce a 10-15-page research paper describing and analyzing, USING QUANTITATIVE METHODS, a topic of your choice in sociology or criminal justice studies. The paper will be double-spaced and properly referenced. Use in-text citations throughout your paper to cite your sources. Label each section of your paper so that I know where the introduction, literature review, methods and data sources, analysis and discussion begin and end. DUE DATE: December 18, 2020 (11:59pm – Eastern Time).  I will not accept late projects unless you can demonstrate you are experiencing extenuating circumstances (e.g. serious illness, family emergency). Final grades are due by December 22. I need a minimum of time to read and grade all the papers. Please note that ‘I have too much work’ is not a valid excuse for turning in your paper late. *Email your research project to my Potsdam address: [email protected] FINAL PAPER CONTENT: Cover Page: Your name Course name and number Semester TITLE: You must give an original title to your project – Do not just title it as “Research Project”. Find a title that catches the reader’s attention. Date of submission Introduction: (Use assignment Research Question and Rationale to complete the introduction) Begin with an introductory sentence that catches the reader’s attention. Identify your topic. What is the purpose of this research project? What is your specific research question? What is your hypothesis? What variables are included in the research question? Define those variables. Why is it important to address your topic? Summarize the outline of the paper in a few sentences. Literature Review: (Use assignment Literature Review to complete this section) Definitions How did authors of different studies/articles define their topic? Compare and contrast the definitions across the articles you reviewed.  What is your specific definition of the topic? Compare and contrast the articles Compare and contrast the articles you got from the library. Distinguish articles based on: Purposes Research questions Variable operationalizations Research designs Sample size and selection method Data Results Analysis Strengths and limitations Methods and Data Sources (Insert assignment Methods and Data Sources here!) Is your research: Descriptive? Explanatory? Exploratory? Evaluation research? A mix of different types above? What data did you use? Remember that your analysis must rely on existing data or statistics. Examples of sources of existing data or statistics can be found in the assignment Methods and Data Sources Instructions (see also hyperlinks in PowerPoint slides on “Using Available Data”) Where did you get the data? Which agencies, or organizations are the data from (E.g. US Census, General Social Survey, FBI, Child Protective Services, etc.?) What are the roles and purposes of these agencies? When were the data collected? What years, timeframe?  What type of information do the statistical tables, charts, provide? Do not describe the data yet, only what kind of information is available. (E.g. ‘this US Census table lists the number of households of three or more people between the years 2010 and 2020’ or ‘This chart shows the percentage of people who were arrested by race categories’) In other words, what can you hope to extract from these data tables, charts you found? What are the strengths and limitations of using the data you collected? For example, maybe the data only covers one specific year and not a time range, or the data does provide numbers by gender, but not by race. Use your judgment to evaluate how useful these data sources can be and what their limits are. OPTIONAL (for extra credit): If you want: briefly describe the survey questionnaire you designed (survey questionnaire assignment).  What kinds of questions were included and how do you think this instrument could assist researchers in measuring various concepts and issues related to your topic? What would be the target population of your survey? How would you gather a sample of respondents? In other words which sampling techniques would be appropriate and doable (E.g., nonrandom, simple random, systematic sampling, etc.?) Results: (Insert assignment Results here!) Statistically describe your variables using existing data or statistics. What are the numbers, recent trends, and statistics on your variables? When you refer to numbers and statistics, please provide some situating information. Don’t simply give me percentages or numbers without any information as to their origins. Do this for both dependent and independent variables: Section 1: Describing the dependent variable Section 2: Describing the independent variable Section 3: Discussing how independent and dependent variable MIGHT connect. After, if you have time and if the data are available, conduct some bivariate analysis However, given the challenges of accessing data, you won’t be able to account for every single aspect of your research question. It is perfectly acceptable to raise questions on the potential links between your variables in case the data are not available. Analysis and Discussion: Restate your research question and hypothesis Do the results confirm your hypothesis? Discuss Compare your analysis with existing findings and analyses from the literature review.  Did you find similar results or not?  Since this is a term paper and not a graduate thesis, most of you will likely raise questions more often than validating hypotheses. That is perfectly fine. Don’t worry if your data don’t explain everything. All I want to see is if you are able to get some data on your variables and discuss the potential links between the two in a structured and coherent research report. After you have discussed your results and findings, end with a conclusion outlining the following: Summary of findings and observations. Highlight the key points of this paper. What are the contributions of this paper? What are some limitations of this paper. Which aspects that you did not cover would need scrutiny in the future and why? End with an opening on future research imperatives. References: Provide bibliographical references of all material you used to produce the paper, including the data sources (e.g. hyperlinks to agencies and organizations from which you got the data and statistics).  Do not include references cited by other authors if you have not read them.  All references will be in the same format in either ASA or APA style.
