Students will select and critique a media article on a crime topic using the Toulmin framework. See the “Assessment 4 Article Options” document for the articles that you will choose from. You will need to identify the main arguments presented in the article, and critique them using Toulmin’s framework. Your presentation will contain both PowerPoint slides and a script (this will be written in the “notes” section of PowerPoint). While OUA students will not be delivering their presentations orally, you should aim for a presentation that would last approximately five minutes. This means that your script should be roughly 500 – 750 words and your PowerPoint presentation should contain roughly 5 – 10 slides (not including the introduction, overview or reference slides). Your presentation will have four parts (see example presentation for an illustration): Part 1: Introduction and overview Part 1 should introduce your presentation and present an overview of what you will speak about (this is similar to a title page and table of contents for a written assignment): The first slide should be an introduction, which includes your name, your tutor’s name, the course title (CCJ101 Criminology Skills), and a short title for your presentation topic. The second slide should be an overview, which details what your presentation will cover and in what order. Part 2: Applying Toulmin The second part of your presentation will break the article down into parts according to Toulmin’s framework: Identify what the main claim, or argument is. It might even be in the headline. Once you understand the claim, start to identify what the grounds are for the claim – what are the reasons, facts or evidence the article presents to support the claim? Once you have considered the grounds, think about the logical reasoning (i.e. warrant) the article is using. Once you understand what the reasoning is, see if the author offers any backing, or evidence, for this reasoning. Next consider whether the article is offering a balanced point of view. Are there any statements in the article that could be considered as rebuttals – alternative viewpoints? Does the article concede certain points (accept these other arguments), and does it refute them (argue against these other arguments). Finally consider whether there are any qualifiers in the article. Are there statements that adjust the strength of the argument – such as ‘probably’ instead of ‘definitely’, or ‘most’ rather than ‘all’? Part 3 – Analysis The third part of your presentation is where you apply your critical thinking and evaluate the author’s argument. In particular, you should discuss the following: Do you think the grounds are good? Are they based on good sources? Is the warrant, or reasoning, logical? Do you accept the reasoning? Why or why not? If there is no warrant, or if it is left unstated, is this OK? Perhaps you think the reasoning is obvious or well known. Does the article offer any backing? If they don’t offer any backing, do you think that is OK? Did the article offer a balanced point of view through a rebuttal? If so, is the rebuttal sufficiently refuted (i.e. does the article provide a strong case against the rebuttal)? If qualifiers are used, does this make the argument more or less convincing? Overall, are you convinced of the article’s claim? Part 4 – References The final slide in your presentation should present the reference list entry for your article in proper APA format. There will only be one reference for this assignment as no additional sources should be used.
