Thus far you have learned about and reflected on the challenges facing education in Australia, research on professional development and attempts to measure and improve teaching quality in schools. You have studied classroom observation systems and you have reflected on characteristics of quality learning. This two-part task asks you to apply your learning to this point to develop a plan for staff improvement and to create a short video that presents your rationale and goals for your plan. The Assignment: Part I: This is the written part of the assignment. Introduction: Provide a brief (approximately 250 word) introduction to your school in which you give a sense of the school location, student and teacher demographics and the current state of teaching quality (this is your assessment). Explain what situation exists related to teaching and learning that you feel could be improved. This situation could be within a particular department, a specific year group or an issue across the school. Please use a pseudonym so that the school cannot be identified. If you are not currently working in a school, the situation can be hypothetical or based on past experience. Please feel free to speak with me if you are not sure about the situation you propose. Proposal: Lay out a six-month plan for improving the quality of teaching and learning in your school. This can take the form of multiple paragraphs or a bulleted list. What is your plan to improve teaching and learning in your school? What is your timing for implementation? Do you have a month-to-month plan or are you looking at this as a six-month project? Please include at least three references to support your ideas. This section should be approximately 500 words. Conclusion: What do you see as the potential short and long-term benefits of the plan you have developed? What are the benefits of using your approach as opposed to other approaches to professional learning? What challenges do you envision you will face and how do you plan to overcome those challenges? This section should be approximately 250 words. Part II: This is a video component. Create a 2-3 video in which you present your thinking from part I to your staff. Imagine that you are the principal or the professional development director for your school and you have been asked to share your thinking with your school staff. Explain to your staff what you hope to accomplish with your plan and explain the basic outline of your plan to your staff. This brief video should be persuasive as you are attempting to convince your staff that this plan is in their best interest. The best way to submit this video is likely to create it and upload it to a web hosting service (like Youtube) or a cloud space (like Dropbox). If you use Youtube, I would suggest making your video unlisted and simply post the hyperlink along with your assignment.
