Writer I can’t seem to find any timeline she is referring to so I copy some of the student post and maybe can have some kind of idea.

Hello Everybody,

For the discussion this week I have selected homosexuality removed from DSM in 1973 as the event I found most interesting. I selected this event because of a few reasons. First and foremost, as a gay man, this event is very important to me because it means this is part of the reason, I can be open about my relationship with my fiancé nor would I be able to marry him. This is also very interesting to me because while I knew that homosexuality was looked at as an illness in the past, I did not realize that it was still considered a mental disorder until 1973 (Annenberg, 2001). To think that so many LGBTQ people who have contributed to society and culture around the world would have been thought to have a mental disorder because of their sexual orientation. People such as Neil Patrick Harris, Ellen DeGeneres, Elton John, Freddy Mercury, Christian Siriano, Kim Petras, and RuPaul to name just a few have contributed to entertainment through music, movies, books, comedy, fashion, Broadway shows and more. These are things that they would have never been able to do if homosexuality was considered a mental disorder still. Looking at this event from the perspective of studying people this homosexuality being removed from the DSM allowed for the focus on other areas of psychology so we can better understand the things that can be helped through treatments and medicines such as anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder,  depression, etc. From the perspective of studying groups, this even provided a whole new group of people to study the culture of, the LGBTQ community.

2ndThe event that stood out to me the most was when Bill Wilson started AA (Alcoholics Anonymous). This clearly stuck out to me because I a recovering drug addict. Even though it says Alcoholics Anonymous, I can still relate because in Narcotics Anonymous, alcohol is a drug. I just find it interesting that someone started a support group like that to help other addicts. Because of that first AA group, there are so many more groups today that are 12 step based. You have NA (Narcotics Anonymous), CA (Cocaine Anonymous), HA (Heroin Anonymous) and MA (Marijuana Anonymous). They have other groups as well that doesn’t have to do with drugs. It can be food or sex as well. I am sure there are way other groups out there that I don’t know about. If AA wasn’t started who knows where recovering addicts can go for support. Some of the meetings may be run differently, but they all have the same concept, just don’t use one day at a time. A lot of society does  not understand addiction and how it affects people’s brains and life. If people can find a meeting to go to, it would probably make them have a better understanding of who addicts were when they were using and how they have changed now into a productive member of society. I am just happy they have these groups today for people that do not want to use drugs anymore.

  1. The most interesting event that happened in the psychology timeline happened in 1973. According to Annenberg Foundation (n.d.), this is the year when homosexuality was removed from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Prior to this year, the DSM had automatically considered a homosexual to have a mental illness. The thought of automatically believing someone was mentally ill because of their sexual orientation is an odd thought to me. I have many friends that are homosexual, yet are really good people and very “normal” otherwise. The change in this belief is a huge win for people who are homosexual and also for people who are truly mentally ill. After the change, social scientists can focus on people who actually have a mental illness and the causes rather than grouping homosexuals into this group, when there is nothing wrong with them necessarily. I’m sure there are some homosexuals who suffer from mental illness just like heterosexuals, but grouping them automatically based on their sexual orientation is wrong in my opinion.
