The Scientific Method is a set step by step process developed to solve scientific problems and questions. The Scientific Method begins with making an observation. For example, I observe that my dog is not sleeping in his own bed. The next step in this process is to research the topic so I would inspect the bed for additional information. Now that the research is done, it is time to form a hypothesis, or an educated opinion, on what could be going on. So my hypothesis is that he will not sleep in his bed because it is covered in dirt. Once one has a question and hypothesis, it is time to run an experiment. To test the reason my dog will not sleep in his bed, I should clean his bed to either identify or rule out that possible solution. Next step is to analyze the data of your experiment: my dog, once I washed his bed, went right back to laying in his bed like he used to do. The last step to the Scientific Method is to come up with a conclusion. To come up with a conclusion, you need to look at the results from your experiment. Since my dog went right back to his bed after I washed it, I can conclude that the reason he would not sleep in his bed was because it was dirty due to the drastic change in behavior displayed during the experimental process of the Scientific Method.

Observation: My dog Tyche is extremely reactive to other dogs. Background research: Tyche was a rescue dog with an unknown past and limited history. It is possible she suffered a traumatic brain injury involving the frontal lobe following blunt force trauma (struck by a car) when younger, which could create issues with impulse control and emotional expression/communication. Develop a Hypothesis: Tyche will become less reactive toward other dogs (perceived unpleasant stimuli) following exposure therapy and counter-conditioning using a food reward. Create experiment: In this experiment, there will be a control and experimental group. The control group is altered/unaltered female dogs, the experimental group is altered/unaltered males. Tyche will be exposed to both groups, but will be positively rewarded using a food reward when a male is present. Tyche will be rewarded when looking at me and sitting in the presence of other dogs. A positive result will be when another dog can be within 10 feet of her without reactive behavior. Collect data: Tyche’s reactivity with male dogs seemed to be brought down to a tolerable level when counter-conditioned to sitting and looking at me when the stimulus is present. Tyche’s reaction to female dogs (control group) remains unchanged and reactivity is still present. Conclusion?: In using counter-conditioning using a food reward with Tyche, her reactivity towards other dogs was to a much lower extent and she was able to tolerate multiple dogs within a 10 ft radius of her. Judging by the results of the experiment Tyche will continue to become less reactive towards other dogs when positive reinforcement with a food reward is present, confirming my initial hypothesis.
