Hi this is my assignment: The requirements for this second response paper are the same as before: 2 pp minimum, two source minimum. The sources at your disposal: Handlin, Howe (Ch 3), The Bintl Brief and Hester Street (the movie). If you can’t access the movie any other way, you might need to rent it (a couple of bucks). The library also has a DVD version, and we will watch more of it together next class.

Try to understand enough about Handlin, to come up with a handy definition of this concept: one that you can apply to the other sources. If you liked the Bintl Brief – who doesn’t! – then a few well chosen examples from there, combined with some intelligent use of Handlin and Howe and you have the makings of a very good paper. Swap out the Bintl Brief for the movie and you have a similar foundation for some meaty analysis. Remember you are trying to illustrate the interconnections between the concept – viz., of an alienated immigrant society – and the representation of immigrant “Jewish” society in your other sources (including the movie.) Don’t forget to come up with a title of your own. Reference your sources as before.
