UTD Land Use

  • The topic our team will work on is the UTD land use, and we are proposing 3 project ideas of either (1) a sports facility enhancement, (2) a new research facility, and (3) a University Village renovation. With a budget of $150,000 and a project duration of 4 months, our team will analyze these three options for the best decision for UTD to proceed with. Our business story, at a high level, will be to develop and understand the required documentation, research, project scope, scheduling, risks involved, communications, allocated resources, project charter, and many other deliverables for each of our options.

  1. Sports Facilities Enhancement

Our first project solution will be to enhance the UTD sports facilities around the UTD fields. Specifically, we want to look into implementing new bleachers and scoreboards around the soccer, baseball, and outdoor areas. The project benefits will include more spectators to enjoy games/outdoor activities (an increase in capacity), professionalism increases, and also foment sport atmosphere at UTD. Some of the risks to keep in mind are tripping hazards, sharp edges, risk falling off and through bleachers, etc. For resourcing, we are considering are Southern Bleacher Company as a stakeholder/vendor into this project.

  1. AI and Robotics Research Addition

The second project proposal is an addition for UTD’s AI and Robotics teams. Specifically, this would be an extension of either ECSW or the SPN buildings. The new addition would be relatively small, but would provide enough space for grad and undergrad students to test out their robotics projects. The facility will include lab tables, design/implementation areas, and a couple of new computers to handle heavy software. The purpose of this project would be to motivate university students in contributing to the next ideas of of AI and Big Data. Some things to consider are costs such as machines, software licensing fees, and other indirect costs. For resourcing, we are considering the university and local robotics companies for this project. This would then be beneficial for scholarship opportunities to the university and potential hires for the AI companies.

  1. University Village Renovation

The third project we would like to propose is a renovation to the University Village. The renovation of UV will be comprised of a list of enhancements such as replacing the windows with either Low-E or Smart windows, deep carpet cleaning, re-painting the walls, and some others. Benefits from this project include a higher thermal efficiency that will save UTD’s overall heating/AC cost, an inclusive environment, removal of debris and bacteria from cleaning carpet (healthier living space), and visually enhancement (UTD marketability). Risks involved within this project include exposure to paint products or other toxic chemicals and budget blowout due to scope creep. For resourcing, we are considering the university as a stakeholder, related subcontractors, and outside vendors.
