Write a research paper discussing the biblical theology of one Gospel on one of these themes:
– The Holy Spirit (Luke or John are the best choices)
– The identity of Jesus
– Salvation
It is generally wise to narrow the focus of your paper, with the possible exception of the Holy Spirit topic. For example, you could narrow a paper on the identity of Jesus to “the meaning of Jesus as Son of Man” or “Jesus self-understanding of his deity.” You could narrow a paper on salvation to “how Jesus’ death on the cross paid for human sins” or “the place of faith in salvation.” The title of your paper should reflect your specific focus. Remember to limit your discussion to the teachings of one Gospel on your subject.
Your paper should stress the results of your personal inductive study of the text of the Gospel you choose. You should interact critically with major exegetical commentaries, the books on New Testament theology, and journal articles. You should use at least 3 modern exegetical commentaries from the recommended list in this syllabus. You should also make use of other high quality, modern Bible study reference books, such as Greek lexicons, word study books, Bible dictionaries/encyclopedias, books on biblical culture, and biblical theology books. You should use no fewer than 10 modern research sources, not including Bibles and concordances.
Do not simply repeat the opinions of commentaries, class notes and New Testament theology books. Provide evidence for your interpretation of critical issues in key biblical passages. The justifications of your interpretations should be based on details you observe in the passage, the meaning of Greek words, sentence grammar, passage structure, context, and cultural/historical background information.
Your paper should be 8-10 pages, not counting the title page and bibliography. It should be typed in 12 point Times Roman typeface, double spaced, with footnotes and a bibliography in Turabian style. Excessively long papers will be returned ungraded.
