For nearly a century the pharmaceutical company, Eli Lilly, has been forming alliances with over one hundred partners around the world devoted to discovery, development, and marketing. One of those partners is The Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare (AMPATH). AMPATH was created in response to the HIV crisis in Western Kenya in 2001. It was built on a partnership with Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, the Moi University School of Medicine in Eldoret, Kenya, and a consortium of North American academic health centers, led by Indiana University.

AMPATH has continually expanded its successful HIV approach to include more diseases, including diabetes, hypertension and cancer. By 2002, Eli Lilly had already donated nearly sixty million dollars’ worth of medicines to help improve the lives of these patients. In 2009, it launched the AMPATH Oncology Institute with only a single physician and nurse. Since many people in Kenya live in poverty there is a major lack of access to quality healthcare and with only two cancer centers for the country’s 42 million people; screening, diagnosis, treatment and palliative care for cancer are in very scarce supply. Using public/private partnerships the institute has been able to expand its staff and services to include 10 clinicians, six core nurses and an oncology pharmacist, however, the demand still outweighs the supply. In February 2015, the Eli Lilly Foundation announced an additional commitment of one million dollars to help equip a new oncology center, hire additional staff and train local healthcare professionals. The result of this partnership has helped many, many people.
