Our discussions on Pynchons Bleeding Edge have had two emphases. On the one hand, weve thought about how the contemporary individual serves as a hub for an impressive number of networks which they need to regulate.  Weve thought, therefore, about the consequences of people being part of structures and systems, webs and connections, that are, in comparison to oneself, vast and largely unknowable. On the other hand, weve thought about the way in which a remedy to this situation might involve a rethinking of the individual, one that allows them to break free of historical notions of the soul in order to become someone other than the subject created under the micro-physics of power (to borrow Foucaults term).
What are we to make of Pynchons resolution/non-resolution of these two concerns? How does their representation in novelistic prose contribute to our understanding of them?
Over the last few classes, weve focused on Maxs relationship with Windust because it helps make these concerns legible. Your answer need necessarily expand beyond this discussion to consider the novel in its entirety. You may, obviously, need to reference these characters dynamic, but it cannot be your sole (soul!) consideration.
The advantage of a take-home exam is that it allows students to write a thoughtful answer to a question on a novel youve already read. In a 3 hr in-class exam you could be expected to write at least 10-15 hand-written pages to two essay questions. Lets expect that your answer for this exam will be 8-10 pages typed (12-point Trebuchet font, double-spaced) and proofed for writing errors.
As always, your answer should feature a strong argument, intelligent close readings of passages, and a strong knowledge of essay form. In short, it should demonstrate all of the skills that a student in an upper-year English course should possess.
