There are many things that can affect how nurses communicate with their patients. Communication issues are the leading cause of healthcare errors (Raics, 2009). A patients age, culture, race, gender and living situation can affect the way a nurse communicates with them. As a nurse we take in to account the age of our patient when we talk to them. If our patient is a seven-year-old child, we will use vocabulary that they understand. Depending on the patient age and stage of life it will affect the vocabulary they understand. There is also the chance that the patient many be embarrassed if they are the around the same age as the nurse that is giving care. A patient culture can affect what language they speak. Depending on what language they speak at home or in their country. This cause a language barrier, even with a translator there is still a barrier because a lot can get lost in translation. Gender can affect communicate between a patient and the nurse because if the nurse is of the opposite sex the patient may be embarrassed to say certain things. In my experience I have seen many female patients turn away male nurses because they are embarrassed to tell them what is going on. A persons living situation can affect the way a nurse communicates with a patient because we take it into consideration when teaching a patient and or how there living situation can affect their health.
I consider older adults to start at 60 to 90 years of age. In my family older adults are treated with care. They are looked after by other family member to ensure their safety and care. They are taken to doctors appointment by a family member or friend so that they are not alone. In my culture we are taught to care for and help older adults. I myself put my grandmothers compression school on in the morning before I go to work. I take her blood pressure when ever needed. I collaborate with other family members to help with her care. In my community and in society I have seen a range of ways that older adults are treated. Some people ignore them other try to help. I do not believe in doing everything for them because people like to be about to do things themselves, it helps with self-image, but I understand that older adults cannot do everything they used to.
