This lesson is set to introduce the First Industrial Revolution to the students. By the end of the lesson, students will be able to explain the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, its major impacts, and its spread throughout the world.

Students will be able to weigh the different changes between the previous era and after 1700 and understand the current world and the influence of the Industrial Revolution on it.

Historical thinking skill(s) addressed; What is industrial revolution and its history? That is, where did it begin, its causes, phases, and the factory system.

What were its transformative effects? What were the differential timing in different societies after the Industrial revolution set in? What were the demographic and environmental changes? Did the industrial revolution change the social and gender structure?

Inquiry-Based Lesson Plan for History-Social Science

 

1. Anticipatory Set Time: 10minutes
Students will take part in the following warm-up activities before the lesson.

They will watch a pre-approved history documentary and take notes. They will then answer questions based on the documentary.

 

2. Central Historical Question for Lesson Time: 15 minutes
At the end of the lesson students should:

·       Explain the causes of changes from the previous period and within this period

·       Explain the extent to which industrialization brought change from 1750 to 1900.

·       Explain the causes and effects of the various revolutions in the period from 1750 to 1900.

·       Explain how environmental factors contributed to industrialization from during the era.

·       Explain the causes and effects of economic strategies of different states.

 

3. Teacher Input (delivery of historical context) Time: 10 minutes
I will provide pictures of instances of the way of life, such as textile factories and child labor, and ask the class to explain the pictures and determine the time period. This visual analysis will promote analysis and help students know the conditions before industrialization. Their assignment will be to identify the industrial and economic social developments that the Industrial Revolution brought.

 

4.  Student Activity and Investigation (w/ differentiation) Time: 20minutes
An anticipatory set to help engage the students of the lesson will include a number of activities:

·       Students will do individual freewriting following by sharing on their previous assignment on Industrial Revolution development.

·       Students will partake in an out of class enrichment activity such as visiting an art exhibit or a museum and provide proof. Then write a short summary that describes industrialization and how it is related to historical development.

 

 

5. Lesson Assessment (w/ differentiation) Time: 15-30 minutes
The lesson will end with a quiz over the lesson material to demonstrate the principles learned about the topic. They will receive immediate feedback after the quiz.

 

6. Closure Time: 5-10 minutes
A whole-class discussion giving a reflection on changes in world trade patterns, global commerce, communication, and technology after industrialization.

 

7. Student Reflection (metacognition) Time: 10 minutes
To display their understanding of the lesson, all students will write in their journals a reflection of the Industrial Revolution and the impact on the world.
