Essay # 1:

One-Text Critique: Cultural Assimilation

Rough draft Due: September 29th

Length: 500-750 words (2-3 pages)

Format requirements:  Double-spaced, with 1-inch margins all around, and Times New Roman 12-pt. font. You should give your paper a title; include your name, class section and my name.  Also, add a word count.

Grade: This assignment is worth 15% of your grade. (The final exam counts as 1/3 of your final grade.)

Direction: For this essay assignment, please choose one of the following choices.

Choice One:

Each stanza of Marilyn Chin’s 1994 poem “How I Got That Name: An Essay on Assimilation” carries a different tone. Each tone reveals Chin’s feelings toward her family, America, and cultural assimilation.  Using textual evidence from the poem, is Chin’s different moods effective?

Choice Two

Bharati Mukherjee’s “Two Ways To Belong in America” is a “tale of two sisters from Calcutta, Mira and Bharati, who lived in the United States for some 35 years, but who find themselves on different sides in the current debate over the status of immigrants” (280).  The sisters’ points of view on the “status of immigrants” are more complex than just having legal papers.  It is about how to maintain one’s cultural identity in face of assimilation.  Using specific examples from Mukherjee’s essay, analyze both sisters’ arguments to show which one is more logical.

This is a text critique essay, not a research paper. Please do not use outside sources (ex. using Google).  Do not just simply say you argue or disagree. Use strong textual evidence to explicitly support your position.  The purpose of this paper is to hone your analytical skills by “Analyzing other authors’ arguments and modifying, extending, or contradicting them with your own arguments, using summary, paraphrase, and quotation.”

Format requirement: please use MLA in-text citation whether you are paraphrasing or quoting.  Remember, your ideas must be yours.
