Hello Class,

There are seven components in any good disaster recovery:

  • mapping your assets
  • identifying your assets
  • risk assessment
  • recovery objectives
  • disaster recovery setup
  • budgeting
  • testing and reviewing your plan

There are three elements of incident response, plan, team, and tools. The key elements, however, are a longer list:

  • introduction
  • incident identification and first response
  • resources
  • roles and responsibilities
  • detection and analysis
  • containment, eradication, and recovery
  • incident communications
  • retrospective
  • appendices

Cloud disaster recovery is the ability to replicate your system(s) and data to a private or public cloud format, managing the ability to not lose the information and data they are protecting. Traditional recovery, however, is conventional disaster recovery. It uses the secondary data, what you chose to back up, and can be used to rebuild the information you may have lost.

The concerns for disaster recovery will change depending on the company or situation, but here are six popular challenges you should consider. Underlying architectures, multiple OSs, workloads having different requirements, managing backups and recovery options, cost of maintaining the backups and recovery tools, and lastly, errors during the recovery process. The biggest problems, however, are having no plan, planning wrong or improperly, relying too much on technology, not properly being tested, or not enough sufficient information being managed.

Incident response on the cloud is the ability to have an organization aware of their security incidents. Knowing there are complications, damage, loopholes, and having the ability to fix those problems. Whereas in traditional in-house recovery, you have the case for cloud DR (disaster recovery). While cloud-based storage is becoming the new normal, especially for being cost effective, and with less software or hardware. However, you run the problem of having to replace a fully copied IT manager and takes more than just coping the data over to the cloud.

Good day, Instructor and classmates. Here we are in week 5 already, it does not feel like it has been 5 weeks already. Hope everyone finishes strong and passes this course.

  • Discuss the key components of a disaster recovery and incident response program for cloud computing.

The key components, one of them is being able to complete an assessment of the situation to understand how to respond in the attempt to recover. Assessments let IT understand what took place, how it took place and the measures that will be needed to prevent the same issue from happening once again. Having the capabilities in real time tracking is a must for it will support the process in figuring out the solution to the problems and assist in the restoration process faster.

  • Compare and contrast the differences between concerns for disaster recovery and incident response when offering cloud services as compared to traditional privately managed network models.

Having the measures to restore, which is another component of recovery is an ongoing solution because cloud-based systems are always expanding with new capabilities and the securities or vulnerabilities will always need to be updated to prevent future disasters. Part of the response process is to manage the cloud environment from cyber weakness becoming exploitable which include areas of governance, visibility, and shared assets.

Cloud based recovery options can be costly when having to select the service options you may need but is cheaper insurance than loosing data and can end up being an investment rather than expense. 3rd party data centers may lead to higher operational costs but may be worth it in the end. You’ll save money having the capability of getting up and online faster if not having the option to recover and lose money during the time the system is non-operational.
