Objectives:
- Name three methods used to classify infectious diseases and give two examples of each.
- List the six modes of transmission and give an example of a disease that is transmitted for each mode.
- Name an infection of the central nervous system, respiratory system, gastro-intestinal system, and a sexually transmitted infection and basically describe key characteristics of each (infectious agent, incubation period, disease caused, and unique features, if any).
- List the five goals of infectious disease control.
- List the three major methods of transmission of the HIV virus and provide an example of each method.
- Discuss the role of randomization in experimental studies.
- Discuss some of the ethical issues associated with experimental studies.
Instructions:
Step One: Conduct scholarly research, is recommended, or a scholarly search engine, or your text resources to identify an outbreak that has taken place within the last 500 years.
Step Two: Create a 3-5 page, scholarly paper addressing the following (your paper must have at least 2 scholarly references):
Describe the circumstances surrounding the outbreak, describe the impact of the outbreak, discuss if/how the outbreak was combated, and then determine the most appropriate type of statistic to use for investigation.
Decide if it is appropriate to call the outbreak an epidemic, or pandemic, or neither, and defend your answer.
