Sustainable Food System: Urban Agriculture

Urban agriculture is an option to achieve sustainable food system. As population keep increasing nowadays, we need to produce more food to meet the demand globally, at the same time we need to consider which solution is more efficient and sustainable way to fulfilled that requirement. Urban agriculture is one of the solution, it produces sustainable food and does not harm the environment. (Is this always the case?) Urban agriculture can be traditional small outdoor community gardens or modern vertical farms, both of these setting can provide productive, fresh and safe products. Another benefit of urban agriculture is that it helps local communities in both economic and social way. Urban agriculture programs like community gardens can help young people in non-traditional agriculture background to get involved and learn farming skill. After all, while we boost our production to meet the standard demand for food, urban agriculture can largely solve this problem and it is an efficient way to produce food without polluting the environment.
Vertical farming can be used to helping the food production in cities and reduce the energy use for transportation. When food mileage gets reduced, combustion of fossil fuel which used in transportation which contributes to carbon emission then get reduced, thus climate change will get improved. In recent year, people cut down forests into agriculture land and agriculture runoff that contains nitrogen and phosphorous contributes to land waste then lead to serious environmental problems like degradation and land erosion. If we use or convert more conventional land into vertical farms, the chance of getting land being wasted is reduced and some agriculture land can return back to its original ecosystem.
In St. Paul MN, in 2014, the company called Urban Organic opened their first aquaponics farm and they provide local restaurants and grocery stores with ultra-fresh products. Due to high demand, Urban Organic and Pentair expanded the building to 87,000square feet with 14 fish tanks and 50,5-tier towering racks of greens. The farm can produce 275,000 pounds of fresh fish and 475,000 pounds of vegetables per year when it reaches its full capacity.

In Indiana, an Edwardsport farmer from Purdue University College of Agriculture Dean Jay Akridge, is trying to set up a program that help connects students who have no agriculture background with farmers, so that they can get to know agriculture and learn basic farming skills. Another urban agriculture programs called Washington Youth Garden which is a community garden that teaches youth environmental stewardship and nutrition using hands on gardening experience.
At the end, I think urban agriculture has a great potential for the future. Most important reason is that it requires less energy and will produce more sustainable and fresh food compared to conventional farming; in the meantime, it helps mitigate the environmental pressure. Urban agriculture programs also help provide agriculture background to young people, get them involved in agriculture field. Thinking about the bigger picture, for our food system to become more sustainable, we cannot depend only on conventional farming or urban agriculture, we need to combine all the agricultural methods and that will help build a more efficient way to produce food without pollute the environment.
