Choose a city anywhere in the world, at any point in history, and answer the following questions using the economic concepts developed in the course. Focus on the details of your city and how urban economics applies to it rather than a general recitation of economic concepts. Refer to the final chapter of the text to find resources that you can use to learn about the city’s economy

Actions

. Use modelsgraphsexamples, and maps where appropriate. Explain the economic concepts that you learned during the course so that they can be understood by an audience that has not taken the course. Some credit will depend on the choice of an interesting (unique) city, so that you demonstrate some original thought in the application of urban economics to the city of your choice. Be sure to devote about one page to each of the following topics. If you choose a foreign or historical city, it may be more difficult to find hard data on each topic, but usually there is at least some qualitative information available on each topic.

  2. What economic forces hold the city together? What are the sources of agglomeration economies in the city? Don’t just list generic sources of agglomeration, explain how firms and industries in your city exhibit agglomeration economies. You should present some evidence of what the most important industries are in the city and how they affect one another.
  3. What products does the city import and export. What other cities are its trading partners? What products does it have a comparative advantage or specialization in producing and trading.
  4. What kinds of human capital does the city have. What does it do to develop human capital?
  5. Describe the public goods offered by the city, including major parks, transportation facilities, industrial parks, schools and universities, etc. Describe how these affect the urban economy.
  6. What is the growth rate and what industries are driving growth or contraction of the city. What public policies does the city have to encourage or discourage growth? Are the policies effective?
  7. Describe how economic forces have shaped the urban landscape in terms of rent gradientsland use patterns, and building height and density.
  8. What is the state of the housing stock? Where is new housing being developed? Describe the racial and socio-economic composition of the neighborhoods.
  9. What is the crime rate in the city? Which areas experience the most crime. What issues does the city have with law enforcement and incarceration?
  10. What transportation issues does the city face? Does it have mass transit? Describe the city’s transportation infrastructure.
  11. What is the state of the city’s finances. How does it raise revenue?
  12. What are the city’s greatest successes and challenges.
