The study of Ethics and Philosophy is one which brings many different kinds of "thinkers" together. One person’s philosophy on ethics is another person’s philosophy on evil. Yes, EVIL!

Most people agree on some basics about human behavior. See Aristotle’s appeals to moderation in his virtue ethics, in our lesson this week as an example.

But we also understand that there is no one system of ethics that is totally correct. To start us thinking about the different areas of philosophy and ethics, and how we fit into the different molds or world views, let’s discuss the differences and similarities between these views.

To do this, let’s look at the role of right and wrong, laws which regulate behavior, principles vs. morality, and the role of ethics in our society.

For your first post, prepare a detailed response for one of the four scenarios below. Your second and third posts can be with reference to another scenario below or replies to my or your fellow students posts!

Remember, posts without ethics, gain no points!    You will want to READ THE CHAPTERS BEFORE YOU POST!  YOU ARE NOT TO DO THIS OFF THE TOP OF YOUR HEAD!  USE TERMS THAT WE ARE LEARNING!

  1. What are ethics? Do we need ethics if we have laws? Think about seat belt or helmet laws. Why or why not?
  2. Is it ethical to change our own views of ethics based on the situation we are in?  Find an example in the news!
  3. Do you believe these laws to be attempts to legislate ethics? Why or why not? And should governments legislate ethics? Why or why not?  Find an example in the news!
  4. How does Aristotle’s "virtue ethics"(Links to an external site.) (Links to an external site.) mirror your ethical view, or how is it different?

*****READ any posts first, to see if someone else did the scenario you were interested in.  If so, see if you can expand on what they wrote.  Can you answer something different about the scenario?  Can you ask questions or post more information that IS NOT THERE already?

Support your conclusions with an analysis and reasoning. Make sure you include ethics from our book in every post!  You will want to define any ethical concepts you use.  PLEASE, DO NOT JUST COPY AND PASTE WHAT THE COURT OR THE BOOK SAYS!  DISCUSSIONS ARE A CHANCE FOR YOU TO LEARN HOW TO APPLY THE MATERIAL WE ARE LEARNING!

*****You always want to respectfully comment and expand on the posts of your class members.  Remember, you can point out if they are wrong, but do it in such a way that you are polite!!!

*****I, your illustrious leader, will respond with posts, so check those out too.  Feel free to respond to my posts as well as your classmates.  Let’s have some fun.  DO NOT REPEAT WHAT OTHERS HAVE SAID.  IF YOU DO, YOU GAIN NO POINTS!  There is enough material in the week for us to each have DIFFERENT posts!!

Ethics is about making decisions among possible choices.   Maybe we start with making better choices for the people in the offices of legislation?

Think about the Parkland, Florida shooting on February 14, 2018, and see if you can apply this week’s readings to the behavior of the police at the school.
