I admit that at the start of class I was not fully familiar with the term annotated bibliography. I never had an assignment that called for a “list of sources on a topic that includes a summary of each source”, Seyler, 2018. Since my enlightenment, I have come to realize that an annotated bibliography is a tool to ensure that the author has an understanding of the source material used in their products while serving an opportunity to bolster the ethos. I have been guilty of selecting only the parts of a source or cherry-picking in the past. It is something I am working on and hope to improve upon the more I practice my writing. I once found a single sentence in an article that I felt fit the narrative I was delivering while ignoring the substance of the material mentioned around it because it may have been contrary to my point. I skimmed. I am certain that the effort that goes into creating an annotated bibliography ensures building better researching habits as well as one’s credibility as a writer.  I remain curious how often such an approach is called for in future projects.

Uneasy Lies the Head that Wears a Crown: A Critical Race Analysis of the Crown Act by Britney Pitts in 2021 offers a synopsis of the discrimination that plagues the African Americans and has done so systematically for generations, specifically as it pertains to matters of their hair. It covers incidents and perspectives that may seem foreign to those outside of the community including cases where school children are negatively impacted. It points to the notion that black people are forced to adjust to Eurocentric standards of beauty to be accepted into and by society. Pitts touches on the relationship between the black community’s hairstyling and the ties to its ethnic identity (Pitts, 2021). There is a lot of case law referenced; it is a product of critical race theory analysis which I found compelling as the practice is referenced quite a bit in current events. The article feels well-written and relatable. The CRAAP approach to vetting this source was utilized, checking for currency within 5 years, relevance to the subject matter, author’s credibility, the accuracy of the material presented as well as addressing the purpose behind the legislation. I have gone through this article at least twice and even had it read to me on one occasion. More thorough reading creates an appreciation for the information and how it is presented, I am able to more easily connect to it.
