According to Chapter 4’s PowerPoint presentation, “Learning refers to a relatively permanent change in human capabilities” (Slide 5). When you learn, you are essentially expanding your knowledge and cognitive abilities. Kaiser (2013) mentions, “Social learning theory suggests that four processes are involved in learning: attention, retention, motor reproduction, and motivational processes” (Page 8). This is how I learn best. First, I need to understand what I am learning and why it is important. The representations come in form of models or other visual aids. They assist in my learning and help me retain the information. However, I need to be able to practice the act in order to fully commit to learning and understand the results of performing the act. From here, if I can associate a positive end result from mastering whatever it is that I am trying to learn, I become motivated to perform the act.

The textbook also elaborates on learning and focuses on retention. Noe (2017) states, “Learning strategies include rehearsal, organizing, and elaboration” (Page 174). These types of learning strategies can aid in the retention of new information and increase the potential for understanding new concepts. The text also touches on the cycle of learning and how practicing new concepts leads to retention.

Noe (2017) continues:

First, a trainee encounters a concrete experience (e.g., a work problem). This is followed by thinking (reflective observation) about the problem, which leads to generation of ideas of how to solve the problem (abstract conceptualization) and finally to implementation of the ideas directly to the problem (active experimentation). (Page 175).

Noe uses this example to depict the complete cycle that starts with a new concept and leads to the mastering of that concept through direct application. This is similar to the social learning theory as mentioned in Kaiser’s text in regard to motor reproduction which leads to independent thinking.
